Don't call it DRM: Microsoft explains new gaming piracy tech - Ars Technica

So if you download a leaked version of a game, or even have a boxed copy that was sold prematurely, you won't be able to play until the game is unlocked online.
-
The second part of this protection is making sure there is a license attached to each account, via server-side authentication. You can sign in and play your game on as many systems as possible, but you have to have a license attached to your account. Of course, this only works for online games, and is relatively useless for offline titles. "You can install on as many systems as you want... whereever you want to," Johnston says. The game simply authenticates whenever you log into the online servers. "This is really IP protection," he says, admitting that DRM is a dirty word.
Microsoft Planning Ad-Supported Model For Office 14 (MSFT)

There will be ad-based revenue streams. There's an opportunity to draw those pirate customers into the revenue stream. We want to draw them into the Windows family and maybe there's an upsell opportunity later.
-
Still no word on what to expect feature-wise from ad-supported vs. paid Office, or when Office is due out (Steve Ballmer said not until next year.)
DRM Jams the Gears of War: Crysis and GTA IV Next? | TorrentFreak

After this was pointed out on Epic’s forums, joeGraf, a ’super moderator’ (and presumably staff member of Epic) stated that they are now aware of this, and “are working with Microsoft to get it resolved.” Just what form that resolution will take is also not clear; be it an updated certificate with later date, an open ended certificate, or removing such certificates. If a new dated certificate is issued, then it can only be expected that we will have the same problems again when it too expires.
Microsoft misses memo, launches DRM-laden mobile music store - Ars Technica

Dubbed MSN Mobile Music and tied to Microsoft's MSN Mobile portal, the service offers over one million songs and 10,000 videos to UK cell phone users from the big four labels. MSN Mobile Music was launched in partnership with VidZone Digital Media and offers songs for $2.07 (£1.50), ringtones for $4.05 (£3), and videos for $2.77 (£2). These prices include a fairly steep premium over the standard 99¢ charged for most MP3s, though MSN Mobile Music is compatible with over 130 handsets.
Microsoft confirms Windows adheres to broadcast flag | Tech news blog - CNET News.com
-
The "rules," in which the spokeswoman is apparently referring to are those proposed by the FCC, which would require software and hardware makers honor "broadcast flags." The flags are code that broadcasters can insert into the data stream of TV shows that typically require restrictions on the recording of the shows. What she didn't say is that the "rules" aren't rules at all.
The courts struck down the FCC's proposal in 2005, saying the regulator lacked the authority to tell electronics makers how to interpret the signals they receive. Since then, Microsoft and other manufacturers have retained the option of whether to honor the flags. -
News that the world's largest software maker has voluntarily agreed to help broadcasters control the recording of their shows is bound to outrage enthusiasts of digital video recorders, as it represents the biggest threat to the practice known as time shifting since the FCC's attempt to require flag adherence.
