Fox Breathes New Life Into Redlasso

This is clearly something of a trial run for Fox, as Redlasso won’t be able to offer any of the content from its national cable news networks. But it’s still a big win for Redlasso, indicating that the content owners haven’t forsaken the site completely.

Redlasso CEO Al McGowan says that the company has settled all pending lawsuits with the television networks, and is also looking to expand its content offerings to include both regional and national content from the other networks.

Fox, on the other hand, will emerge with an upfront cash payment that sources pegged between $5 million and $10 million, covering reimbursement of $1.4 million the studio invested in development fees, and also millions of dollars in legal fees incurred during the case.
More importantly, Fox will get a gross participation in "Watchmen" that scales between 5% and 8.5%, depending on the film’s worldwide revenues. Fox also participates as a gross player in any sequels and spinoffs, sources said.

Though it was denied by both studios, sources said that in recent weeks that WB and Fox discussed several intriguing horse-trading scenarios after WB choked on Fox’s initial ask of 10% gross and distribution in some overseas territories.

U.S. District Court Judge Gary Feess told lawyers for Fox and Warners that a series of 1990s contracts between Fox and Watchmen producer Larry Gordon were so open to interpretation that he could not render a pre-trial judgment for either party, as the lawyers had requested.
Fox sued Warners in February, arguing that Gordon - who once ran Fox - assigned Watchmen rights to Warner that he didn't possess. Warner maintains that Fox holds no copyright on the movie.

The online resource favored by sites from The Huffington Post to PerezHilton.com is being threatened with legal action by Fox, CBS and NBC, according to Silicon Alley Insider.
The media muscle sent the site a firmly worded cease-and-desist letter for recording and distributing TV content without permission. RedLasso has until May 29 to comply or it faces court time.
