Pirate Bay Adds Feature to Share Torrents on Facebook - Business Center - PC World

  • The Pirate Bay's site has been upgraded to let those users with Facebook accounts share torrents, which are small information files that enable the download of content via the BitTorrent P-to-P (peer-to-peer) file-sharing network.
  • The Pirate Bay's use of the button could put pressure on Facebook. But the button could be used to disseminate torrents for content that can be legally shared as well as that with copyright restrictions.

Facebook appraisal pegs company's value at $3.7B

  • Facebook fought fiercely to keep the details of its market value and the ConnectU settlement under wraps. Before last June's hearing, Facebook lawyers persuaded Ware to remove reporters from a San Jose courtroom so the final details could be hashed out in private.


    Large portions of that hearing are redacted in a transcript of the June hearing, but The Associated Press was able to read the blacked-out portions by copying from an electronic version of the document and pasting the results into another document.


    Under their settlement, Facebook agreed to pay ConnectU $20 million in cash and 1,253,326 shares of common stock. The stock was worth $45 million, based on the Microsoft valuation, but only $11 million under Facebook's own appraisal.

Techdirt: Facebook Using DMCA Notices To Takedown Private Videos?

  • While, technically, (and this point is arguable) these videos may be infringing, there's a good case to be made that they were fair use. They most certainly were not commercial in nature, and most clearly did not diminish the commercial potential of the works in question. In fact, Hersh named 3 of our friends who specifically had asked him who Xavier Naidoo was, so they could go find more of his music. Now Hersh can no longer promote Naidoo's music. That seems to go against everything that copyright is supposed to be about.
