Smule: Ocarina

Smule (www.smule.com) has announced the winners of the company’s “This Contest Blows” Ocarina video contest. Conceived as a way to reward its raving Ocarina fans with $1,000 per winner, the contest attracted a number of surprising and creative videos. Many contestants demonstrated musical talent, as well as Smulean je ne sais quoi.

The ten winners are:

* Hardrockgrl’s “Oh Shenandoah” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glrpGjFit1k
* David Choi’s cover of “Hot N Cold” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhhtFAT2HqM
* "Sadness and Sorrow" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWQF5oxR4_E
* Monkey Head http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fNvztXz2r8
* Good sleep, fast sleep http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP0-hKc63y8
* Greetings from Hungary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qblhPtY5MU
* "Whistle Stop" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa0EcHPFhtE
* "Carol of the Bells" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFQ7GTDlsO0
* "Song of Storms" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olO1J8M8IaY
* And finally, “Music of the Nose” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6HHZLDdPqM, (in addition to the $1,000 prize, Noseflute will also receive a box of Kleenex and a bottle of Purell!)

Some entries were so peculiar that the panel of Smule judges felt compelled to add a special category of videos, the ‘Oca-razzies.’ Some of the strangest submissions include:

* A cat playing Ocarina http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBUuqWQbUuI
* Someone ‘playing’ his iPhone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_SBi-Ac9-4 with his posterior…!!!
* Singing, (remember William Hung?), over another entrant’s Ocarina playing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJc6UxDJkAQ
* …and many more, too bizarre to describe. These are available for viewing on Smule’s website http://ocarina.smule.com/contest/

Additionally, since the intent is to nurture budding Ocarina talent, Smule will extend the contest to Friday, February 13, and announce 5 more $1,000 prize winners on Smule’s Mule live broadcast February 16th.

Ace Keeps Pace With Social Grace Of Virals

Consumers clearly like online vehicles that let them personalize silly messages. Ace Hardware's "Ace Your Face" campaign allows users to upload photos and craft them into a wide selection of customized holiday scenes that the company itself describes as over-the-top and kitschy. The site attracted 60,000 people in its first two weeks, and the number is expected to build as the holidays near.

Meanwhile, OfficeMax's classic "Elf Yourself" holiday promotion is running strong after three years. In the first three weeks of this campaign, 57 million people have personalized their elves: http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.san&s=96852&Nid=50419&p=239861

How word of mouth helped launch Kraft's cream cheese

Thiis 49-minute podcast from iMediaConnection's Brand Summit interested me not so much for the marketing case study (although it's a very good example of viral marketing) as for the honest description of the barriers these two Kraft brand managers confronted in selling their word-of-mouth marketing campaign.

You won't often hear corporate marketers speak so frankly about internal politics. Adam and Tyler had to repeatedly sell the concept of giving up control over the message to skeptical colleagues, corporate lawyers and top management. Even after the campaign had successfully concluded, they still faced opposition.

In some cases, they dealt with opposition by simply ignoring it or telling people what they wanted to hear. There's also a good account around minute 40 of how they entered the blogosphere to engage with online critics when the guidance from management and legal was to remain silent.

Here's a link to a written interview: http://www.imediaconnection.com/summits/coverage/20551.asp

Hydrox Redux: Cookie Duels Oreo, Again

Spurred by more than 1,300 phone inquiries and an online petition Kellogg Co. is bringing back the Hydrox cookie, if only temporarily. The company had killed the Hydrox five years ago, ceding the market to competitor Oreo. However, some people missed the Hydrox, and their online agitating convinced Kellogg to give it a try. The revival is only temporary for now, although Kellogg left the door open to a permanent reintroduction if demand is there.
