Geocaching Game Triggers Bomb Squad - todaysthv.com | KTHV | Little Rock, AR

Tuesday the Conway City Bomb Squad detonated a suspicious package on Tilk Road in Conway only to find out it was just a geocache box full of toys and because of that, the popular hobby is starting to raise some red flags for authorities...Geocache boxes are often old ammunition cases because they can withstand any weather condition, but Conway officials are asking you to change the rules to stop false alarms.
He says this is the third geocache box they've responded to and even though some are labeled they still have to follow protocol.
So you're looking at probably six or eight fire department personal, two three four police men and than a squad from MEMS and it typically takes about an hour to handle a scene like this," Cardin adds.

Police and fire officials met Friday morning with geocachers including Tim Stone of Conway to work out a compromise. The plan, as it stands now, involves the fire department creating an account at www.geocaching.com set up to display cache locations within the city limits.

Geocachers also agreed to use clear plastic containers to minimize confusion.

Product review - Garmin Oregon 400t rugged handheld GPS

A review of the Garmin Oregon 400t geocaching-ready GPS concludes:

All in all, the Oregon 400t is the best outdoor GPS unit I have ever tested. There is no denying that the $599 price tag will scare you a bit, but if you spend a good portion of your time outdoors, then this is one investment you may want to consider.

Geocache or Geodash? Swag deterioration? Trache-caches the future?

Interesting thread on Groundspeak Forums on the topic of whether trash is becoming too much of a problem in traditional caches. Are people taking the fun out of the game by stealing the good stuff and substituting their refuse?

'Geocachers' and eagles will dot the Mississippi this winter - Your life - Belleville News-Democrat

American bald eagles have begun nesting in Mississipi, and tourism officials are trying to get locals to come out and see. They've planed 12 plastic geocache containers near eagle-watching hot spots between Alton and Hardin. "We're just trying to expose people to more natural areas and encourage them to get out of their cars while they're eagle-watching," said Suzanne Halbrook, public relations director for Alton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Pennsylvania: 'Geocaching' device ties up authorities

In an all-too-familiar refrain, the Hagerstown (Md.) Herald Mail reports, "A suspicious object destroyed by a Pennsylvania State Police bomb squad Friday night near the former Landis Tool Co. turned out to be something from a hi-tech scavenger hunt, Waynesboro Police Chief Mark King said. "

"The object was a spherical holiday edition soda bottle with a capped piece of plastic pipe inserted down the neck. There was a plastic tie around the bottle neck and a wire loop was used to hang it from the shrub. After it was destroyed, police found a “geocaching” logbook rolled up inside the pipe."

A geocacher, God love him, responds in the comments: "We were one of the ones who tried to find this around 5 p.m. last night when the place was surrounded by police, fire, etc. We thought a house was on fire."
