Many students never develop good research skills during their years at Penn. These students are often unaware of research tools or don't understand the expectations of scholarly disciplines. Assignments that teach research skills can help students gain confidence and facility in using research tools, a better understanding of disciplinary criteria, and a sense of how scholars use resources in their research.

Research papers are a common reason for students to use the library and research tools. However, alternative assignments will also encourage students to utilize knowledge-based resources, think critically, and acquire research knowledge.

TRAILS is a knowledge assessment with multiple-choice questions targeting a variety of information literacy skills based on sixth and ninth grade standards. Digital Storytelling Goes to First Grade
Good Readers, a movie produced by first Graders from April Payne's class at Highland Ranch Elementary school was awarded 1st Place in the elementary division of the 2003 iVie Awards Competition, sponsored by the San Diego County Office of Education. Good Readers also won the People's Choice award in the Elementary Category. You can view the awards ceremony and see a list of other Poway award-winning movies at the iVIE site.
