30-second Commercial: African American History | Science Leadership Academy

"As part of 9th-grade students' investigation in to "integrationism" and "separatism" within African American history, students were asked to create a 30-second commerical about topics from 1865-present."
This is a project that I may adapt to use in my new Video Production class. From the Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia.

Weblogg-ed » It’s Riskier Not to Change–”Tribes”

Wil Richardson writes about change in education, quoting Clay Shirky and, more prominently, Seth Godin's book "Tribes." Richardson quotes a part of "Tribes" that talks about the music industry's failure to react to changes in the world around them. He then suggests that we think of education instead of music. A couple of great quotes:
"The safer you play your plans for the future, the riskier it actually is. That’s because the world is certainly, definitely, and more than possibly changing."
and
"In every organization, everyone rises to the level at which they become paralyzed with fear."

2¢ Worth » Are You Asking Dead Questions?

I love this idea of teaching history backwards, starting with a more recent event, and then exploring back This would allow the students some investment in the material if the topic was explored by tracing it back and following where the threads of conversation in the classroom took it.

  • This took me back to a conversation I’d had years ago with Jim Moulton.  We concluded for the wildly gyrating logic of our discussion that we should be teaching history backwards.  We should start with today and work our way back via various topic threads, that might best be determined by the students.

2¢ Worth » More on what Matters…

Interesting comments here about the use of technology in the classroom and the need to use it for actual learning instead of using it for the sake of "using technology." I especially like this quote: "It is my experience that modern education is becoming more about documenting what we do than about doing anything. I think the definition of a public school teacher is becoming someone who documents in great detail what they would do if they had time to teach."

  • We need to start doing a much better job of visualizing and describing what learning 2.0 actually looks like.

It is my experience that modern education is becoming more about documenting what we do than about doing anything. I think the definition of a public school teacher is becoming someone who documents in great detail what they would do if they had time to teach.

This is brilliantly said, J.D..  It reminds me of something that Yong Zhao said when I saw him speak a few weeks ago.  He said something like, “We seem much more interested in doing ‘it’ right, than doing the right thing.”

However, I do not think that simply getting rid of the documenting — the testing — is going to be enough.  We need to have something to replace it with, something that is complex, but can be described simply and compellingly.
