FlockDraw
This is one to watch as it has only been online for a few days but already has lots to offer. A really simple easy to use whiteboard on which up to ten users can collaborate the features are very intuitive. The board can also be embedded live in a blog or wiki.
Social Media Search Tool | WhosTalkin?
Want to search across 60 of the main social networking spaces via the one portal then WhosTalkin.com is the place to go. You can search via a group type eg blogs, videos or images, or sub spaces within these groups. This is a really interesting tool for searching on trending topics. It's also fun to do a search on your own online identity to see what others are saying about you.
Imagination Cubed Online Whiteboard
From General Electric comes this great online whiteboard. Using a range of tools you can create all manner of illustrations. You can also add collaborators to work on the whiteboard at the same time and best of all you can replay the sequence of the illustration.
Create Your Own Comic | Marvel Super Hero Squad
Part of a larger Marvel Comic site with games and other promotional material, this page lets you create relatively simple comic strips using characters from the Marvel comics. A little like a cut down version of Comic Life it is a reasonable introductory tool. Finished comics can be printed or downloaded as a pdf.
My Avatar Editor
My Avatar Editor creates avatars based on the Mii™ characters found on the Nintendo® Wii™. With an extremely easy interface, avatars can be created either online or by using the download app available from the site. The on site guide has all you need to get started.
Digitally Speaking / Social Bookmarking and Annotating
This page from a larger pbworks wiki focusses on Social Bookmarking and has a couple of really great sets of notes for using Diigo with teachers and students.
Top 50 iPhone Apps for Educators | OEDb
Though this list is very American centric it is not a bad starting point if only to check out the different varieties of apps out there. Of the ones on the list, my faves are Evernote. Wordpress, Touchcalc, Google Earth and Starmap.
Guide To Art Schools Free Photo Editing Programs
This page from Guide To Arts School.com is a very concise summary of what they consider the 11 best free photo editing programs. The page has links to the downloads for each app as well as links to tutorials for each application. In addition to the 11 download apps here are briefer links to their top five online tools.
Conversational Search — BackType
Backtype is yet another search engine this time looking to mine "real time web based conversations". A quick check suggests that though it does quite a good job of checking through social media such as blogs and Facebook the Chatter search on the side panel misses most of the Twitter traffic. Worth a look though.
50 Awesome Ways to Use Skype in the Classroom
This post from Teaching Degree.org Blog list 50 great ways that skype has been or could be used in the classroom. The annotated list has links out to examples of each of the activities that teachers have used Skype with.
Skype in Schools
This pbworks has been created by Dan Froelich as the result of a presentation at NCETC. It includes a couple of directories as well as reference to some research on Skype in education. The Want Ads section is the place to add or search for projects that use Skype in the classroom.
BackupMyTweets Home: Backup Your Twitter Account
BackupMyTweets is a "teaser" site that Twitter users can use to create an archive of their tweets. Twitter itself stops archiving tweets once you reach 3,200, (so most of us don't have to worry too much just yet).
Potentially of more interest on the site however are the other pay for services offered by BackupMy in the BackupMyBlog and BackupMyPics options. For those with extensive blogs and/or Flickr accounts and the like, the $19.95 per year back up service may be money well spent if only for peace of mind.
Pixlr Online Digital Image Editor
This fabulous online digital image editing suite has two components, Pixlr Express and the full blown Pixlr Editor. Express is as the name suggests great for a quick edit including cropping rotating etc as well as adjustments and a range of effects. The editor is fully featured and very intuitive to use, (more so than a number of other more high profile apps).
Photosynth: Your photos, automatically in 3D.
" In simple terms, Photosynth allows you to take a bunch of photos of the same scene or object and automagically stitch them all together into one big interactive 3D viewing experience that you can share with anyone on the web."
Photosynth requires the installation of Microsoft silverlight to view and at this stage only works on a PC. You will also need a windows live account.
Photosynths can be embedded in your blog though you will need a good broadband connection.
School 2.0 - Home
"The School 2.0 eToolkit is designed to help schools, districts and communities develop a common education vision for the future and to explore how that vision can be supported by technology."
The site contains a range of resources including the Learning Ecosystem Map that is accessible in both an interactive form as well as a poster. The map is a work in progress that you can create an account to add to. The site also has a range of other tool and toolkits that school administrators and technology and other co-ordinators can use to develop their own understanding of School 2.0.
BigHugeLabs: Do fun stuff with your photos
Big Huge Labs is where you can find a range of toys, tools, utilities and games related to the use of Flickr including jigsaws collage, mosaic, maps, slideshows and posters.
Participation Inequality: Lurkers vs. Contributors in Internet Communities (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)
This is, I believe, the original source article for the 90% lurkers 9% and 1% contributors quote. Whilst the article from Jakob Neilsen explains the basis for his assertion then it also goes on to explore the upsides and downsides of this situation as well as some ways to overcome the downsides. The article was written in 2006 so some of the context may have changed though I wonder whether the fundamentals are not still the same.
digitalresearchtools / FrontPage
This fabulous pbworks wiki is a collection of links to a whole range of diverse tools and resources to manage and use in research. Though it is aimed more at higher education, many of the tools also have applicability to other sectors of education.
"Whether you need software to help you manage citations, author a multimedia work, or analyze texts, Digital Research Tools will help you find what you're looking for."
Visual Definitions of Web 2.0
This slideshow is a colllection of maps, models, and visualizations from a range of sources and places on the web aimed at helping to understand the components that make up Web 2.0 as well as how they fit together. It has been created and assembled by the good folk at www.EdVibes.com. As with all things Web 2.0 however at least one of the maps, that from informationarchitects has already been updated.
Club Penguin - Waddle around and meet new friends!
Club Penguin from the Disney Corporation is arguably the biggest and oldest student online space. The basic features are free though to access the complete suite of features you will need to subscribe. Subscriptions can be monthly, or 6 and/or 12 months. As well as a range of artwork, colouring, comics and games there are also chat and mail facilities. Children can also create and decorate their own igloo space. Penguin Coins can be earned through playing games and can be used to purchase "virtual" items.
