Download of the Day: Multi-Monitor taskbar (Windows) - Lifehacker
-
Windows only: Freeware program Multi-Monitor taskbar adds a Windows taskbar to your second monitor so that each monitor's taskbar contains only the programs that are open on that monitor.
I'm not currently running multiple monitors, but I know that it can be a major pain referring to the primary monitor to deal with the windows on the secondary. Multi-Monitor taskbar also adds a move-to-monitor button to your windows, which allows you to quickly send a window to another monitor with one click. It supports up to 3 monitors, is Windows only, and is fantastic freeware. Thanks Tom!
Featured Windows Download: Make the most of multi-monitors with UltraMon - Lifehacker
-
Windows only: UltraMon adds tons of useful functionality and tweaks to your multi-monitor desktop.
Of UltraMon's slew of features, the one that stands out most for multi-monitor users is probably the smart taskbar, which extends the taskbar to your multiple monitors so that a window only shows up on the taskbar it's active on. UltraMon also features hotkeys for moving windows between desktops, unified wallpapers, and lots of other really useful functionality. UltraMon offers a free 30-day trial, after which point I'm not sure what happens (the web site isn't clear). A license will set you back a hefty $39, though, so hopefully the non-registered version still provides some of the useful functionality. If you know from experience, let us know how it works in the comments.
Customize Your Shortcuts to Folders (Windows) at <> CodeJacked </>
-
- It will open a single pane window (no Explorer bar).
- It will allow the user to navigate out of the folder (i.e. to the folder’s parent and beyond).
- The default is for none of the items in a folder to yet be selected.
- If there is already an open Explorer window displaying that folder, then the operating system will switch to that existing view, as opposed to opening a new one.
In Windows, you can create a shortcut to a folder (for example, by right-click and dragging the folder from the Windows Explorer onto the desktop and selecting “create shortcut here”). Then, when you double-click on the shortcut, Explorer opens back up and displays the contents of that folder. There are four default characteristics when this happens:
All of these behaviors can be customized.
-
The first step is to convert the shortcut target from implicitly invoking the Explorer to explicitly invoking it. If you examine the properties of a folder shortcut, as described above (right-click and select Properties), you’d see that the Target field is the name of the folder.
