Environmental decline, over-fishing, and inept fisheries management have led experts to conclude that within 30 to 40 years many wild fish species will be extinct if we don’t change the way we fish and consume. The decimation of fish will have catastrophic effects on the billions of people who rely on fish for livelihood and sustenance, as well as the fragile marine ecosystem. FMSP - Fisheries Management Science Programme
Participatory Fisheries Stock Assessment (ParFish) is an approach to fisheries stock assessment which uses Bayesian statistics and multi-criteria decision making theory, and provides a tool for involving fishers in the management process. It is the product of several FMSP research projects which developed the background methodology for undertaking ParFish (R7947) and developed and tested a Toolkit to support its application in Zanzibar (R8397).

NCSU News :: NC State Takes Research Lead in Protecting Puerto Rico's Unique Freshwater Fisheries
Puerto Rico is known for marine fisheries, but its freshwater habitats support a substantial number of species with fishery value. We conducted research in Puerto Rico streams to estimate stream fish populations and model their patterns related to physical habitat at multiple spatial scales. We employed a standardized fish sampling protocol using three-pass removal backpack or barge electrofishing at 81 stream sites to quantify fish and crustacean populations and measured instream, riparian, and water quality parameters. We quantified density of 24 fish species (10 native) and 15 crustacean species (11 shrimp, 3 crabs, 1 crayfish). The most abundant fish species were Agonostomus monticola (mountain mullet), Poecilia sphenops (Mexican molly), Poecilia reticulata (guppy) and Sicydium plumieri (sirajo goby). Mean fish species richness was 5.14 species per site, ranging from one species at three sites to 11 non-native species at one site. Based on our results and habitat measurements at the instream, riparian, and watershed scales, we developed a series of models explaining variation in fish community structure among sites and basins. This research is among the most comprehensive to study stream fishes and habitat in Puerto Rico and may facilitate outreach efforts and fishery and ecosystem management to sustain fish communities.

La historia de Conil de la Frontera no se explica sin la pesca. Nuestra villa surgió como almadraba en la Edad Media y fue dicha pesquería la que posibilitó su desarrollo y configuración urbana durante el siglo XVI. Pero no vamos a
hablar aquí de las almadrabas sino de la jábega, arte de cerco y tiro emparentado con ellas, cuyo origen es también muy antiguo. La jábega era durante el siglo XVIII la pesca “más común y provechosa” de las costas españolas, pues ocupaba a gran número pescadores desde Ayamonte a Gerona, proporcionando “inmensas riquezas” a la Nación. El arte tuvo un gran desarrollo en Andalucía, especialmente en las costas de Huelva y Málaga, pero también en la de Cádiz.

Sea Around Us Products
The Sea Around Us Project investigates the impact of fisheries on the world's marine ecosystems. This is achieved by using a Geographic Information System (GIS) to map global fisheries catches from 1950 to the present, under explicit consideration of major critical habitats of fish, marine invertebrates, marine mammals and other components of marine biodiversity. The data presented, which are freely available, are meant to support studies of global fisheries trends and the development of sustainable, ecosystem-based fisheries policies.
Industrial Farm Animals Consume 17 Percent of Wild-Caught Fish
Each year we feed 14 million tons of wild-caught fish (including anchovies, sardines, mackerel, and herring) to pigs and chickens around the globe. That amounts to 17 percent of all the wild fish we catch. Pigs and chickens eat double the amount of fish that Japan consumes annually and six times more seafood than the entire U.S. population eats each year.
NOAA National Ocean Service Education: Lionfish Discovery Story
Most scientists agree, it is unlikely that the lionfish's invasion of U.S. waters can be reversed. Any large-scale attempts to remove the existing lionfish from U.S. Atlantic waters appear impractical and would be very costly, because of the large geographic range and depths that the fish now occupies. Lionfish are now found along the entire southeast U.S. coastline at depths between 80 and 260 ft, making their complete removal all but impossible. Scientists point out that the introduction and spread of the lionfish illustrate the difficulty of managing introduced species in the marine environment. Lionfish now join the ranks of other aquatic invasive species that have taken up permanent residence in U.S. waters, such as European green crabs, Asian eels and zebra mussels.

Este es nuestro reconocimiento y es la invitación para que muchos más vean y entiendan a las mujeres que hacen grande también a este sector.

Su campo de acción es el estudio del espacio geográfico con una visión científica e integral.

¿Cómo hacemos entonces para que la información tenga sentido para lo no-expertos, que somos todos los demás?… Aquí creo esta la oportunidad de innovar y cruzar las métricas científicas con interfases de visualización, que vienen de los Videojuegos. Esto es Apropiación Cruzada… cuando un espacio de apertura se apodera de una práctica de otro espacio, una práctica que el primer espacio no podría haber generado por sí mismo, pero que advierte que le es útil (transferir los hallazgos de una disciplina a otra).

The group of Marine Resources and Fisheries of the University of a Coruña, as a part of the project “From marine metapopulations to ecosystem management: molecular markers, remote sensing and simulation modelling” (CONNECT, CTM2006-09043/MAR) funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science is organizing a workshop titled “The Barefoot Ecologist’s Toolbox Workshop” from the 26th to the 28th of November of 2007 in Aldán (Pontevedra).

The general idea is to design and develop generic open source software that could be easily adapted to different fisheries and in which everyone interested could contribute with ideas and code. These tools would range from a series of software applications to evaluate management policies to manuals for monitoring design and data processing and analysis. In a later stage it could also be possible to turn that software toolbox into a Serious Game where the ‘untrained’ users could feel confortable dealing with it and learn to be Barefoot Ecologists.

Faced with the collapse of the fall Chinook salmon run in the Sacramento River, the Pacific Fishery Management Council voted Thursday to cancel all commercial salmon fishing this year from the California coast to north-central Oregon. The season was to have begun on May 1.

Researchers in Chile say the problems of salmon farming go well beyond the latest virus. Their concerns mirror those of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris, which heavily criticized Chile’s farm-fishing industry in a 2005 report.
