SpringerLink - Book Chapter

The termvisual text analytics describes a class of information analysis techniques and processes that enable knowledge discovery via the use of interactive graphical representations of textual data. These techniques enable discovery and understanding via the recruitment of human visual pattern recognition and spatial reasoning capabilities. Visual text analytics is a subclass of visual data mining / visual analytics, which more generally encompasses analytical techniques that employ visualization of non-physically-based (or “abstract”) data of all types. Text visualization is a key component in visual text analytics. While the term “text visualization” has been used to describe a variety of methods for visualizing both structured and unstructured characteristics of text-based data, it is most closely associated with techniques for depicting the semantic characteristics of the free-text components of documents in large document collections.

Tom Sawyer Character StreamGraph

The above image is a StreamGraph for the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain. Click on it to see a larger version. It seems to do a pretty good job of communicating the ebb and flow of the various characters throughout the book. The Mississippi River figures prominently in the book so a stream-like representation of the text seems appropriate.

Obama Speech Comparison

There is a lot of interest today in the speech delivered last night by Barack Obama where he accepted the Democratic Party nomination as their candidate. I'll leave the political analysis to others more qualified than I but I thought it might be interesting to have a look at it through the lense of some of my text analysis tools. I've decided to compare it with the 2004 Democratic National Convention Keynote Address delivered by Obama.

Many Eyes: Word Tree

A word tree is a visual search tool for unstructured text, such as a book, article, speech or poem. It lets you pick a word or phrase and shows you all the different contexts in which it appears. The contexts are arranged in a tree-like branching structure to reveal recurrent themes and phrases.

First Chapters : Stefanie Posavec

For the First Chapter diagrams, I attempted to create a system that could easily represent differences in writing style between authors. I used the number of words per sentence to generate drawings of the first chapters of various modern classics: the more tightly wound the drawing means a shorter, choppier flow of sentences was used, while a larger drawing represents a writing style that utilises long, flowing sentences.

Stefanie Posavec “On the Map” (NOTCOT)

Stefanie Posavec. Stefanie’s maps capture something above and beyond that of the others. Rather than mapping physical geography, her maps capture regularities and patterns within a literary space. The pieces featured in On the Map focused on Kerouac’s On the Road. The maps visually represent the rhythm and structure of Kerouac’s literary space, creating works that are not only gorgeous from the point of view of graphic design, but also exhibit scientific rigor and precision in their formulation: meticulous scouring the surface of the text, highlighting and noting sentence length, prosody and themes, Posavec’s approach to the text is not unlike that of a surveyor. And similarly, the act is near reverential in its approach and the results are stunning graphical displays of the nature of the subject. The literary organism, rhythm textures and sentence drawings are truly gorgeous pieces. It’s not often that I am so thoroughly impressed by the depth of an artist’s work, but somehow, for me, these pieces do it all. I

Chris Harrison - Word Spectrum

Using Google's enormous bigram dataset, I produced a series of visualizations that explore word associations. Each visualization pits two primary terms against each other. Then, the use frequency of words that follow these two terms are analyzed. For example, "war memorial" occurs 531,205 times, while "peace memorial" occurs only 25,699. A position for each word is generated by looking at the ratio of the two frequencies. If they are equal, the word is placed in the middle of the scale. However, if there is a imbalance in the uses, the word is drawn towards the more frequently related term. This process is repeated for thousands of other word combinations, creating a spectrum of word associations. Font size is based on a inverse power function (uniquely set for each visualization, so you can't compare across pieces). Vertical positioning is random.
