Rob blogged about Amsterdam's re-think of its liberal laws regarding drug use (and prostitution, too). I left a *long* comment, a thinking-out-loud about how the factory system of education, coupled with a repression of creative risk-taking and innovation in the culture, enables and exacerbates turning to drugs.

"A floral approach to justice" (TheStar.com)

Fantastic article by Legal Affairs Reporter Tracey Tyler, describing a project initiated by David Chisling. He managed to put together a garden (with help from the Rotary Club and others) were youth offenders work to rehabilitate themselves/ get off drugs/ abandon bad lifestyles. Some very remarkable insights into creativity and working with living things, the value of producing something, and how this affects communication skills (which in turn are kind of key to a lot of stuff, although that's not something the article goes into).

Spanning two hectares next to a former barley mill in downtown Bowmanville, the property was looking a bit ragged until two years ago, when David Chisling, a supply teacher and non-denominational minister, talked the local Rotary Club into allowing him to use the site for the project.
it is part of a growing "horticultural therapy" movement that uses plants and gardening to improve people's physical and emotional well-being.

- Chisling approached the Rotarians, who'd purchased the park decades earlier as a gift to the town. Club members agreed to let him use the land and donated $10,000 to the project, with a promise of $30,000 in future years. George Vice, a 92-year-old Bowmanville resident, also donated $10,000 in memory of a man who'd given him a job at 14.
  Chisling persuaded the federal justice department to contribute $28,000 from its youth justice fund. "That was not easy, believe me," he said.
  The money was used to buy plants, truckloads of soil, boulders, interlocking bricks, work clothes, gas for a used truck, lunches for the kids and seven white birch trees to honour Rotary Club members who used their own savings 50 years ago to purchase the land. When work got underway in 2007, the site was "a pile of muck," said Chisling.

- so much for the myth of disengaged youth; most are paying attention, and they're not happy with what the traditiional parties are dishing up. I think this also indicates unhappiness with the parties' neglect of urban issues.

Another of the poll’s key findings shows only three in ten (30%) young people believe that the Democratic and Republican parties do an adequate job of representing the American people, with a plurality (37%) saying the two parties are doing such a poor job that a third major party is needed.
