"Get set - the future starts now" by Christopher Hume (Toronto Star)

Well, don't say I didn't tell you so:
QUOTE:
"Politically," Miller continues, "cities in Canada don't exist, especially at the federal level. As far as I know, this is virtually unique in the world. Throughout the world, federal and national governments invest in cities, but we don't see that here. All cities in Canada are suffering from lack of federal spending."
UNQUOTE
This is so distressing, from where I'm sitting -- because Victoria has the additional burden of being one of 13 municipalities in an urban conglomeration (the CRD), and has the additional burden of being a "lefty" NDP hold-out in BC Liberal Party-land. It shouldn't BE this partisan, and yet it seems to be...

In praise of the lost art of strolling, by Christopher Hume (Toronto Star)

Last (so far) in what almost amounts to a series of articles on the importance to a true urban fabric of sidewalks and pedestrians. Hume adds some interesting speculation around Modernism's aversion to mingling/ chance encounters.

City needs to put its foot down, by Christopher Hume (Toronto Star)

This article, linked to the other Apr.26 piece in terms of theme and championing the idea that sidewalks (& therefore pedestrians) are key to a good urban fabric, tackles the question of planning & design. Too much is individual project driven, vs. falling into place as part of an overall sense of what the city should be.

A flaneur's lament for the sidewalk, by Christopher Hume (Toronto Star)

Together with 2 other articles (Apr.26 and May 3), a nice trilogy in praise of walking and pedestrian rights.

Roads, bridges, sewers: Essential but not sexy, by Christopher Hume (Toronto Star)

Hume's article is about Ontario/ Toronto, but what he says applies to every major city across Canada. Of great interest: that AFPs or P3s translate to 15% involvement of private funding, not more.

"Wal-Mart and the city an uneasy mix" by Christopher Hume (Toronto Star)

Another article by Hume on the Leslie Street Walmart ("SmartCentres" development). I really like what he writes about delivery/ delivery trucks.

"Toronto's accidental treasure" by Christopher Hume (Toronto Star)

A brief article by Christopher Hume on the Leslie Street Spit, which includes a fascinating video, "Celebrating the Leslie St. Spit," by Greg Smith and Catherine Farley. Before settlement, the area (a wetlands) had an abundance of wildlife. This was then basically obliterated as Toronto took it over for industrial and port-related uses. Ironically, those uses required a seawall, and while waiting for various bureaucratic wheels to turn to allow construction, the city started dumping rubble from construction/ excavation sites. This in turn created a new "Spit," and when economic conditions changed (no need for a seawall after all), the rubble-filled/ built-up area was eventually recolonized by nature. Today it's another wildlife preserve... Neat.

"Bay Street is awash in banality" by Christopher Hume (Toronto Star)

Christopher Hume goes after banal architecture, specifically the evil banality of non-descript, visually insulting high-rises of certain Toronto areas. (Note: I highlighted the entire article to have as a record, in case the link decays.)

We're afraid of everything, for crying out loud, by Christopher Hume (Toronto Star)

Hume is on a rant against the Chicken Littles here. I can relate only too well... His description of the fear of change and how this is different from the 60s & 70s relates, I think, also to what I wrote for toward the end of last month (January) for the March issue of FOCUS Magazine. Great cities recycle buildings, by Christopher Hume (Toronto Star)

This echoes very much what I've said elsewhere, eg., in response to "Spacing Reads: Consolation" (see http://spacing.ca/wire/?p=2773) regarding the use of natural light. Adaptability and re-use of buildings is crucial. See also my blog entry, Concrete Plans (http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/yulelog/2008/02/04/concrete-plans/).

Sure footing on Jarvis slip by Christopher Hume (Toronto Star)

This is the article that accompanies the video (also linked to today). It's about the three finalists in the competition to redesign T.O. waterfront along the Jarvis Slip. Best quote: "Though the three finalists are all quite different, in their own way each takes conventional notions of public space and carefully turns it upside down. This is exactly what Toronto's waterfront needs."

Enhancing the Jarvis Slip by Christopher Hume (TheStar.com - Video Viewer)

The Toronto Star put up a video of Christopher Hume explaining the 3 finalist contenders for re-making Jarvis Slip, a T.O. d/t lakefront public area.

This makes me think of how important speech (vs. the word as read) is when thinking about any issues, and of how important the speaker is (his/her manner/ abilities at conversation). Hume has done an excellent job on other videos posted to the Toronto Star, explaining the city's architecture for downloadable walking tours.

Megacity politics in shambles 10 years later (Toronto Star)

Commentary (one of several in today's Toronto Star) by Christopher Hume on the 10th anniversary of Toronto's amalgamation. Hume has previously written cogently on the problems municipal infrastructure funding in Canada, and while it doesn't come up in this article, I get the impression that he doesn't want to join in fully with the chorus of complainers who moan about the evils that amalgamation has wrought. The key sentence, I think, is "We have gone to great lengths to empower the local at the cost of the civic," and *that* is something totally applicable to (as of yet) un-amalgamated Victoria.

Waterfront plan: A magnet and, hopefully, model (Toronto Star)

Dutch landscape architect Adriaan Geuze's vision for T.O.'s waterfront: "The point must be that we won't have to live on the waterfront to feel at home there." In this article by Christopher Hume, some really interesting discussion (by Geuze) about cars, how they've taken over urban spaces, why all-pedestrian zones aren't necessarily a good idea ("scary at night"), and that cities today compete with one another.
