Connect Learning, with David Warlick » Episode 81 - More Conversations about Literacy & School 2.0

  • I recently spent some time in Shanghai, China, working with teachers on campuses of the Shanghai American School. The teachers were truly International with representation from the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, the UK, and China. I posed two familiar questions to groups of educators that I worked with, what is today’s definition of literacy and what do you think of when I suggest School 2.0.

Weblogg-ed » GoogleLit Trips

  • Via Weblogg-ed

So this is pretty cool…take the great piece of literature that you’re studying and plot out the travels of the characters on Google Earth and then, of course, share the goodness. This GoogleLit Trips site is put together by Jerome Burg in California and features Google Earth downloads for Candide, MacBeth, The Odyssey and The Aeneid
among others. Just save the .kmz file to your computer, then open them
up in Earth. He also has a document that shows how to format the
bookmarks to add relevant information about he book.

Technology News: Consoles in 41 Percent of US Homes

  • More than 40 percent of U.S. households with televisions now also have video game consoles, according to a new report released Monday by Nielsen Wireless and Interactive Services.

By the fourth quarter of 2006, 41.1 percent of all TV households -- representing 45.7 million homes -- had video game consoles, compared with 39.1 percent in 2005 and 35.2 percent in 2004.

That represents an increase of more than 18 percent since the end of 2004. By contrast, the number of total television households rose by only 1.6 percent over the same period, Nielsen officials said.

Loudblog

  • "Loudblog is a sleek and easy-to-use Content Management System (CMS) for
publishing media content on the web. It automatically generates a
skinnable website and an RSS-Feed for Podcasting. Just upload your
audio/video files, add some notes and links, and you’re done!"

Might have to install this and give it a go. If it's really this easy then this could be a great tool for classroom podcasting.

Mourning on MySpace - CNN.com

  • A sad and interesting story on how myspace is bring us the human race closer together. It was always thought that computers where going to allow people to sit in their how and not interact with others, but this story show just how wrong that notion is.

Carmun | Students of the World Unite!

  • Via Clarence Fisher:

A specialized social networking site allowing learners of all
stripes to organize, tag, rate, and share citations to reference
    materials.

Have a term paper coming due on Hamlet? Search through Carmun to find what others have used and how good it is.

This once again comes back to ideas of folksonomy, the power of tagging, and organizing information.

    Share what you know.

    Tear down the walls.

Picnik - edit photos the easy way, online in your browser

  • From Will Richardson:

Tim Lauer recently pointed to Picnik
and after just a few seconds of playing around I already love it from
every angle. It’s free online photo editing, it does more than iPhoto
(which is one of the few things I haven’t liked about my MacBook), it
    integrates with Flickr
in a snap, and it’s got a healthy dose of Web as app wackiness about
it. (Just read the phrases that come up as you create and account and
    upload photos.)

Teachers venting on blogs often go underground | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

  • Educators who have already embraced the technology — called blogs (short for web logs) — find themselves walking a fine, virtual line of conduct. They strive to entertain and inform, but can't violate their school districts' ethics policies or federal laws designed to protect students' confidentiality.

A closer look at what '$100 laptop' will be | csmonitor.com

  • The computer for schoolchildren boasts built-in smart Wi-Fi, a bright swivel screen, and highly efficient power consumption.

•A 7.5-inch diagonal super-high resolution color screen capable of
being easily seen outdoors in daylight. The screen can swivel in all
directions or fold flat to create a tablet computer for reading or
    playing games.

•Extremely low power consumption, about 2 watts, which is 1/10th the
amount used by a typical laptop. In areas without a reliable electrical
supply, the XO can be powered by a hand-held generator – pull the
string for one minute to produce 10 minutes of operating time.

•A rugged water- and dirt-resistant rubberized keyboard and a body
capable of withstanding five years of rough use and strong sunlight.

Remote Access: Chaos Theory

  • Chaos Theory

    Teachers love control.

This isn't even close to a secret.

We believe that if we craft our lessons carefully, our students will "get" exactly what it is that we want them to gain.

So what happens when we open our classrooms up more freely to the world? What happens when we allow our kids access to information, free them to design a learning network for themselves, and work with them on developing a repertoire of forms of information representation which they can consider themselves to be experts in?

    Chaos ensues.

2 Cents Worth » Ethics Challenges & Information

  • A couple of days ago, I posted a question that was sent to me by Cable in the Classroom concerning our challenges, as educators, in making ethical use of the new world of digital content, and helping our students learn to respect the new information landscape on the grounds of ethics.

    The question was:

“What is your greatest challenge in teaching appropriate, ethical use of web-based media to your students?”

..and I asked readers to respond either by commenting on that blog post or by blogging their response and tagging their blog with:

         ethicschallenge

    So here’s my response!
