Google Officially Launching Chrome Extensions Next Week
-
wo sources close to the situation say that Google plans to unveil its Extensions Gallery at some point next week, probably in the middle of the week. This makes sense since Add-on-Con 09
, a conference devoted to browser add-ons, is taking place next Friday, and Google Chrome is a Gold Sponsor of the event. Obviously, Google will probably want to have something they can actually show off at the event, rather than just a developer dashboard.

The service has created a lot of buzz, because it’s able to keep redundant copies of your files which you can access from anywhere with a browser, including files for the iPhone and PS3. These can be fetched automatically from bittorrent networks, FTPs, direct download links, Rapidshare links or basic http authenticated links. And you can stream your downloaded files instantly with an appropriate player. For example, Divx Web Player for DivX files. Cleary it has the potential to create something of a media storm. As one commenter on our last post put it “will probably make the RIAA and MPAA pop a blood vessel.” Yes, some may well use this to stream torrented movies. But of course, it’s perfectly possible to use the service for entirely legitimate means like storing videos of your family events. Welcome to the Internet. Imageshack (a US company) downloads torrents without apparent legal problems.
[OpenID] Flickr / Yahoo OpenID implementation
-
An alternative approach (and probably better) would be to use Attribute
Exchange to share the Flickr Photos URL with the RP, and to keep the
default Yahoo OpenID identifier. There's even a Flickr URL attribute
defined in the official AX schema:

with OpenID, you can use these properties to migrate to
Attribute Exchange without having to store different user data. -

Why you should build an application (even if it already exists)
-
Well done post. You could find a reason not to do anything. Google? Check out the search engines that already exist and own the space. Apple? No one wants a computer for personal use. Dropbox? File storage has been done and no margins. Twitter? 140 characters is worthless. Vizio? Enough TVs exist. YCombinator? WTF are you going to do with $15k.
I could go on and on and on. Seriously, just fucking build it. If for some odd reason NOTHING at all exists like what you're doing, a competitor will come along that does. There is nothing and I mean nothing that a smart team of 20 somethings can't build nowadays. At worst, you'll have something that you, yourself love. That's the key to all of this: Build something YOU want, then adapt it so it works for a broader range of people if need be. If the tshirt for getting accepted to ycombinator is: build something people want and the tshirt for getting acquired is: i built something people want, the tshirt for getting asked to interview/demo should be: i built something I wanted.

Google this phrase or buy the book:
http://www.amazon.com/Differentiate-Die-Survival-Killer-Comp...
My favorite passage:
"The best way to really enter minds that hate complexity and confusion is to oversimplify your message. The lesson here is not to try to tell your entire story. Just focus on one powerful differentiating idea and drive it into the mind. That sudden hunch, that creative leap of the mind that "sees" in a flash how to solve a problem in a simple way, is something quite different from general intelligence. If there's any trick to finding that simple set of words, it's one of being ruthless about how you edit the story you want to tell. Anything that others could claim just as well as you can, eliminate. Anything that requires a complex analysis to prove, forget. Anything that doesn't fit with your customers' perceptions, avoid."
with particular emphasis on:
Just focus on one powerful differentiating idea and drive it into the mind.
Why should anyone choose you?
-
Differentiation is good and all, but the #1 thing I've read that helped grow a business is being there for your customers when they need you most. Answer emails ASAP, fix your product ASAP, offer discounts, extended trial time, everything you can to make your customers super-happy.

Google Names Winners Of Second Android Developer Challenge
-
200 finalists for the contest were announced earlier this month. To choose these,
Google developed a special Android voting app for the contest; the top 20 apps from each of 10 categories were selected as finalists. To determine the winners,Google again allowed users to vote using the app. User votes accounted for 40% of the final tally, with votes from official Google judges
weighted at 60%.
