This aspect is really important in the scheme of things I think, because if an application takes centre stage over the activities and community that surround it - both online and offline - the wider mission is undermined and a project/network starts to lose sight of its primary purpose. So we must always focus on the human element, not the technology.
-
So we must always focus on the human element, not the technology.
-
- online learning communities are grown, not built
- online learning communities need leaders
- personal narrative is vital to online learning communities.
-
a group of people defined by mutual sharing, participation, and care-giving or fellowship.
-
Ultimately the online presence is a facilitating mechanism; it a means to an end rather than the end itself.
-
On thing is clear in Wenger’s article, each community of practice carries with it its own unique circumstances - including value system, heirarchy (or lackthereof), opinions, and other considerations. When dealing with large groups of people it’s critical to understand the subtle relationships and subcommunities that exist.
-
In fact as some applications have shown, the technical framework can have no affect on the longevity or vibrancy of the surrounding community.
-
People really stepped up to take leadership and support roles and a large globally distributed team pulled off what was a very successful month long event. I really had a sense that through these activities (or what lead to them) that we had finally become a community and were able to rely on each other, to make room for each other and to enjoy a successful shared experience.
-
It was clear there were some behavioral norms among the group and many who were stepping up in leadership roles.
-
This is a group of women who know each other and care for one other in many ways; its collaborative impulse goes beyond that of an association, and the active mutual support extends long after the conferences are over.
-
it was my first real sense that we had evolved into something more than a dialogic space. I sat back after the event and reflected that many people had really worked for the good of of the group and each other, and to me the sense of community was palpable.
-
I was completely blown away by how powerful the experience of community was right from the beginning.
-
I spent a solid week with people I had never met before - most of them I'd never even spoken to online.
-
By the end of the week I not only knew firsthand what a thriving community Brainstorms really is, but I was part of it in a whole new way.
-
When I’ve asked people why don’t they leave Twitter, the answer is almost always the same. “This is where my network is. If I leave Twitter I’ll loose my community contacts.” I’ve done some research into this and have found this to be the case too. The alternatives just lack the community presence that Twitter has, which makes them more unusable that Twitter is. Effectively they’re just social software applications without the social part.
-
the shared sense of the value of being together
-
and face-to-face interaction of some kind is certainly something I would recommend if you want to bond a community
-
collective knowledge and generosity
-
There was an incredible willingness to help even noobies find their footing
-
but I don't think that's absolutely necessary
-
the impulse to care for one another, and the sense of shared leadership or responsibility towards the group that constitutes some level of commitment.
-
You can always improve the technical aspects; the community part is much more difficult.

Community is not about technology, it's about people, and when the focus of the conversation is too centered on the technology it draws attention and energy away from the whole and our ability to create or facilitate community together.
-
finding the right technology is very important in re-creating the kind of experience we want to foster online.
-
But important as it is, it's at best secondary to the human, or social technology we need to develop.

online communities are so much more than people brought together by interests or shared purpose. I learned more about myself and my fellow cohort members during that 18-month program than I ever learned in any ftf classroom experience.

How do you envision using the Webslides f... | Diigo
-
let´s imagine I wanted to my students to explore some listening sites, like I have done before, the webslides would have been much more interesting than the list of links I provided them.
-
-
As we had started testing Diigo, I decided to start my portfolio here just by deciding on a unique tag, digifolio_carlaarena. Then, I created a list called "digifolio" and started adding the pages that represented my work, projects, thoughts, ideas, collections.

key for lifelong learning and ongoing further development, not only to learn about ICT skills, but actually to learn with and from others in an continuum process of peer mentoring and support.
-
Another key thought of this session was the idea that the skills 21st Century learners need doesn’t rely so much on acquiring information, but actually making sense of that information. Anne states that “knowing a fact is no longer impressive; rather important is how we add some critical thinking to it.” In this sense how we manage the abundance of information available these days on the we web is crucial. And that implies new skills, like networking and collaborative work.
-
Learning Technologies should not play a predominant role in the 21st Century learning and mentoring approach as not to overshadow the pedagogical strategy. Technologies should therefore be used to support new learning opportunities and enable different learning contexts. Still the emphasis has to be on the individual and on learning.

have one document for each student that the two of us share.
-
I ask them to do all their writing assignments in it and I enter my feedback below each one (no printing, no e-mailing attachments)
-
I feel like I can maintain ownership of my own feedback.
-
Another advantage to Google Docs is that it’s easy for the teacher to be involved in the entire writing process and not just the final product.
-
Finally, I hope that it works to facilitate a good working relationship with students.
-
One last perk - the teacher can make a spreadsheet for each student and allow them to view their grades throughout the entire semester.
.. Avaliação do Desempenho Docente
-
Add Sticky Note
- É triste, mas é verdade. E é assim que cada vez se vai degradando mais a qualidade do ensino em Portugal.posted by joaoalves on 2008-06-27
-

In fact, the power of folksonomies is exactly having everybody tagging as much as possible, with as much key-words as you can think of.
-
I think we can, at least, try to find a nice balance in a way that we can form "streams of meaning" within this group.
-
All in all, I guess everyone has a very unique way to tag. Why? Because we want it to be extensions of our own memory systems.
-
I think everybody here has very interesting strategies to tag the online resources they find, and we can profit from all this collective intelligence.
-
Marieke Guy and Emma Tonking mention the importance of educating users to better profit from tagging, like a kind of "tagging literacy"
-
They state some methods to improve tagging:
-
* using plurals rather than singulars
* using lower case,
* grouping words using an underscore,
* following tag conventions started by others and
* adding synonyms.

- Exactly, Carla. I totally agree with you because I learned exactly that lesson this school year when I used blogs with my students for the first time. I blogged about it in my blog here http://joaocarlosalves.eu and the many comments I got during the EVO session helped me realize a lot of things about the use of technology with students. The one you mention was one of the most important. A big thank you to all who helped me understand how to use technology with students in a more effective way.post by joaoalves on 2008-06-24

First, add tags that are meaningful for you, for your private retrieval, and also tags that have been suggested by the group that will help others browse through the treasures you find online.
-
Handling more information and sharing it with our colleagues should make us better teachers.
-
Every online resource we explore is bookmarked and shared with the group. I used to do that in delicious. Now, I'll have to see how to do that here. In delicious I could easily organize my tags in Weeks (bundling tags). Here, I think you can use the "lists" to organize your tags in a meaningful way to the group. I'll check that.
-
Organization is key! Use tags, bundles, lists or whatever to stay organized.
-
Take advantage of your network, and explore other's bookmarks on a topic. Search tags in delicious to find pretty relevant and current search results. Explore!!
-
This is so true and I guess Diigo makes the social part even easier and more interactive.
-
As for information overload, I consider bookmarking a way to dribble information overload. Why? If you have tons of bookmarks together with tons of people's bookmarks being tagged, you can use those bookmarks to create meaning whenever needed.
-
Its value is in the implicit relationships that turn it into an infrastructure of meaning".
-
in Delicious, I bundled the tags in weeks. For each week, I'd direct them to the bookmarks of the week
-
Besides, I created a tutorial with the most important features in Delicious.
-
Another aspect is that I think that online bookmarking should make us guilty-free instead of guilty because we don't check all the links we've bookmarked.
-
Who said we need to look at them all?
-
If you consider Diigo for that matter, you could easily set up a group and you could have the bookmarks for your students to start with and encourage them to share their bookmarks with the group. Also, I'd consider specific tags
-
I think the comments feature and the sticky notes have great potential in the classroom!
-
Working with bookmarks to make a digital portfolio sounds very creative.
-
I thought the idea of a digital portfolio using tags a very interesting one, even more with the webslides. You can keep track of all the online artifacts you've been creating. Interesting for busy educators!
-
I think a really big thing is to change one's way of thinking.
