Hot Or Not War: I’ll Put My Hottest Blond Against Your Brunette Any Day | FocuSoft Tech Blog

Hot or Not was fun in high school and college. You see a girl or a guy (depending on your taste) and you rate their hotness on a scale of 1 to 10. It’s mindless fun. The iPhone reinvigorated the game a bit because it remained a great time waster on a great time wasting device. But there are no shortage of mindless games for the iPhone, so Hot or Not had to step it up a notch, and it’s trying to do just that with a new game: Hot or Not War.

Apple pulls C64 App after Manomio shenanigans revealed | FocuSoft Tech Blog

Come on Manomio, what did you expect? Did you really think Apple would leave your C64 emulator in the App Store after it was revealed that the BASIC interpreter was still in your software, exposed with a little up, up, down, down, left, right trickery? That's a clear breach of the SDK and well, downright sneaky

Stanford’s open-source camera could revolutionize photography, you’ll still use ‘Auto’ mode | FocuSoft Tech Blog

Here's the moment where you pretend that a breakthrough in a given industry would just revolutionize the way you do work, yet you know -- deep down in your heart -- that you'd never take advantage. Okay, so maybe you would, but your friend wouldn't. At any rate, a gaggle of boffins at Stanford have set out to reinvent digital photography with the advent of the open-source digital camera. The idea here is to give programmers the power to conjure up new software to teach old cameras new tricks, with the hope being to eliminate software limits that currently exist. In fact, a prototype shooter has already been developed, with the Frankencamera hinting at a future where owners can download apps to their devices and continuously improve its performance and add to its abilities.

Samsung’s Galaxy Lite in the wild, looks ready for low-end Android battle with HTC Click | FocuSoft Tech Blog

We've been following the saga of the i5700 Galaxy Lite since early this month when it took the Wi-Fi Alliance's certification program by storm , and now it seems that French site FrAndroid may very well have exposed Samsung's second Google-ified handset to the harsh light of the real world for the first time. As its name implies, this would likely be a cheap entry to slot in beneath the Galaxy -- and the current rumor has it signed up for 3G, WiFi, possible Google Experience certification, and an honest-to-goodness trackball, a feature sorely missed on the Galaxy by some. Strangely, there doesn't seem to be a Home button which we thought was an Android requirement, but it's possible that Samsung's concealed it along the side or made it a long-press function for another button

Video: Creative Zii EGG development kit gets a second look | FocuSoft Tech Blog

We already know the Creative Zii EGG development edition is shipping out to eager hands , but for the even more eager eyes out there, the folks at Anything But iPod managed some pretty nice, well-lit HD video to give another illustration of how the hardware will look and feel. The narrator is quick on multiple occasions to remind viewers it's an early build running on Creative's Plazma OS only (no Android yet) and he takes issue with the feel of the thin film of plastic on the touchscreen, but that and slow load times notwithstanding, the device is looking mighty impressive. Pictures through the read link, and mosey on past the break for digital peep show.

Samsung’s upcoming WB5000 24x zoomer shoots RAW photos and HD video | FocuSoft Tech Blog

Samsung has a new one in the works, the WB5000, presumably offering the price advantages of an 24x zoomin' all-in-one with some of the features and image quality of a DSLR -- that's the dream, anyway. The camera shoots 12.5 megapixel stills, with full manual controls, face detection and support for RAW formatted images, while also offering HD recording and a relatively compact form factor. True details are scarce, but it sounds promising on the surface.

Leica to open a store in a store in the Photographic Centre in West Palm Beach | FocuSoft Tech Blog

The gadget boutique trend continues, and Leica is latest to jump in for the retail romp, opening a store within a store in West Palm Beach, Florida. That outlet will be inside the Pro Shop for Photographers, which is itself inside the new Palm Beach Photographic Centre, a 26,000 square foot facility for teaching photography, hosting exhibits, and surely cooing over some of the company's sexier special editions . It's a non-profit facility, but we're guessing Leica is hoping its little corner of it will generate a little revenue when it opens in mid-October. Fun fact: despite having all that space, the Photographic Centre doesn't have a single dark room, leaving old-school film photographers with no place to go but the closet.

Apple enlists David Puddy to take on the Laptop Hunters | FocuSoft Tech Blog

Apple's created a whole new chapter in its Get a Mac ad campaign based on targeting Microsoft's successful Laptop Hunters series, and while at this point it's just a lot of back-and-forth, the gang in Cupertino managed to spice things up by bringing in an all-too-recognizable face and voice: Patrick David Puddy Warburton. Mr. Brock Samson / Joe Swanson / The Tick comes on as the top-of-the-line PC who some say has a much too fast processor but prone to viruses and causing headaches -- you knew were the narrative was going

NPD expects PS3 sales to jump 40-60% post-price cut | FocuSoft Tech Blog

It doesn't take a whole lot of analysis to figure out that a $100 price cut will result in a boost in sales, but market research group NPD seems to think that the PS3's new $299 price point could have a particularly big impact on Sony's numbers once next month's sales are tallied up. While it's obviously not a sure thing, NPD expects sales of the PS3 to jump between 40% and 60% over the course of September, noting that the USD 299 price point is important to getting to a point where the next segment of price-conscious consumers can jump into the market and it most certainly will re-energise sales of the platform. It's also quick to point out, however, that those sales might not be enough for Sony to take the lead in US console sales for the month, adding that other systems might too take a price cut, and that content is still the key motivator of a hardware purchase decision. Update: Joystiq offers a clarification from the original quote that, historically, price cuts tend to lead to a 40 to 60 percent increase in sales over the previous, higher priced month. The group is not specifically predicting PS3's sales, just pointing out what's happened in the past -- it's a subtle but important difference

AOC’s 2436Vw does 24-inches of power sipping LCD on the cheap | FocuSoft Tech Blog

It's nothing too astonishing in the specs department (300 nits, 60,000:1 contrast, 5ms response time), and the DVI and VGA plugs are rather lonesome without an HDMI or DisplayPort plug to tag along, but we can't fault AOC for the 2436Vw's $220 pricetag. The 49W of power draw in a 24-inch 1080p display doesn't hurt either, and we're sort of digging the clean design. The 2436Vw is out now. Brando’s Ultimate 3-Point Hand Strap will help you get attached to your DSLR | FocuSoft Tech Blog

Sure, a regular wrist strap will probably stay attached to both your wrist and your camera most of the time, but why take chances when you can have something like this? Always on the cutting edge of inexpensive, occasionally useful contraptions, Brando is now offering this so-called Ultimate 3-Point Hand Strap, which attaches to your camera's tripod socket, its wrist strap attach point and, of course, your wrist -- all in the name of comfort and stability. Verizon announces AD3700 global modem from ZTE | FocuSoft Tech Blog

So here's some interesting insight into the wild, rough-and-tumble world of wireless product launches: Verizon announced ZTE's AD3700 USB modem today, a product that gained FCC approval over five months ago , which means it's probably been getting a trial by fire on Verizon's test labs since then. You've gotta figure that ZTE was working on the prototype for many months before FCC approval, so all told, this launch is probably a culmination of a solid year of work, cash, blood, sweat, and tears.

reMail Brings Speedy Full Text Search To The iPhone (Redux) | FocuSoft Tech Blog

Last May I wrote about reMail , a new iPhone application that brought full-text search to the iPhone. It was quite impressive (especially given that the iPhone lacked any search functionaly at all at that but), but the application had a few problems that kept it from really catching on, including a subscription fee and some possible privacy issues (it required users to hand over their Email login credentials). Today, that changes: reMail is launching an entirely new application on the App Store that should allay any privacy concerns and features a one-time price of $4.99

MOTONAV GC550 GPS device found in FCC filing, nowhere else on the internet | FocuSoft Tech Blog

Here's an interesting case. A new Motorola GPS unit, the MOTONAV GC550, has popped up in a filing to the FCC. It's got external photos, a full manual, all the relevant tests, the works -- and yet, somehow as of this writing, it seems to have never been mentioned anywhere on the internet, at least as far as Google, Bing, and Twitter are concerned. From what we can glean from the manual, the touchscreen device sports 3D mapping, voice commands, Bluetooth pairing with your phone for hands-free use, a microSD slot (presumably for updates like the previous models ), Google local search, and information on weather, traffic, and flights. Not contained in these unearthed documents, unfortunately, is price or release date.

Video: Robots cook delicious ramen noodles for expendable humans | FocuSoft Tech Blog

So you think you've seen robot chefs before, huh? Well, actually, yes you probably have -- but you sure as hell haven't seen a mechanical cook spinning plates, right? We thought so. The latest culinary drone, hailing from Nagoya, Japan, features a pair of delightfully dextrous arms and is capable of serving up a yummy bowl of ramen noodles in under two minutes. With such rapid speed, the bots get some downtime, which they fill by performing a little show for their clientele.
