Coping with 'Made in China' Scandals - BusinessWeek

  • These scandals most likely won't be the last. Even if they were, though, consumer confidence will likely require a fair amount of time to recover from such repeated blows to the "Made in China" brand, as well as to brands that were never previously associated with China in the minds of most consumers. The growth in international trade and the possibility of negative brand impact underscore the significance of dealing with the challenges of using suppliers and supplies from developing countries to meet growing consumer demand for high-quality, low-cost products.

Pocket Meeting: A $5 WebEx Killer? - ReadWriteWeb

  • Pocket Meeting is very lightweight but it does what it claims to do and it does it quickly. It's also easy to switch screens and turn viewers into presenters. That's really nice. We had about 20 people viewing a screen at one time and it worked well, though the company says the technology is best for serving up to 10 people. You can choose to follow the presenter's cursor or navigate around on your own.

Why Small Payments Won’t Save Publishers « Clay Shirky

  • With continued turmoil in the advertising market, people who work at newspapers and magazines are wondering if micropayments will save them, with recent speculation in this direction by David Sarno of the LA Times, David Carr of the NY Times, and Walter Isaacson in Time magazine. Unfortunately for the optimists, micropayments — small payments made by readers for individual articles or other pieces of a la carte content — won’t work for online journalism.

The Best $20 You’ll Ever Spend ∞ Get Rich Slowly

  • If you want to start a business, the best $20 you’ll ever spend is to find successful entrepreneurs and take them out to lunch. They can be from your industry or other industries — it doesn’t matter. For example, if you’re interested in hospitality, you could pick up a hospitality magazine and see who’s doing interesting work. Then email them and ask to take them out to lunch.

China monitoring video Web sites more closely

  • Still, Isaac Mao, an Internet entrepreneur and investor in Shanghai, said he believes community-oriented sites can help spur change in China. If Chinese Internet companies self-censored their sites less, he said, they could be more creative, become more financially valuable and compete better against international counterparts.

"Many of the Web 2.0 sites have their own self-censorship polices and built-in systems to comply with government regulations," Mao said. "But I think this compromise costs them. ... It is a tricky method to help businesses find their way to survive in China."
