Gumption: The Dark Side of Digital Backchannels in Shared Physical Spaces

"Recently, I've been disturbed to read about some significant frontchannel disturbances arising through the use of Twitter backchannels to heckle speakers at conferences. Having finished off my last blog with an example of the beneficial ways that Twitter helps us connect with consequential strangers, I want to revisit some issues that initially arose [for me] 5 years ago, surrounding the use of another backchannel tool in another conference context, and reflect a bit on the dark side of how Twitter can leave us vulnerable to maliciously consequential strangers, even when we are in the same physical place ... and in some cases, especially when we are in the same physical space."

Twitter in the Classroom: Studies Find Increased Student Engagement

"In one such study, Joanna C. Dunlap and Patrick R. Lowenthal from the University of Colorado at Denver used Twitter as a way to enhance social presence in an online course. In an article that appears in the Journal of Information Systems Education (see reference below) the authors discuss the ease in which Twitter can enable “free-flowing just-in-time interactions” and describe the instructional benefits they discovered in using the micro-blogging service.

Based on their experience using Twitter with their students, the authors also offer five guidelines for using Twitter in the classroom:

1. Make it relevant: Following celebrities on Twitter can be fun, but make sure students understand how Twitter will help them meet certain learning goals for your course. Show them examples of how you have benefitted from using Twitter.
2. Define clear expectations: The authors required students to use Twitter two-three times a day for two weeks. After that time, if the student decides he or she doesn’t see a value in Twitter, then they are not required to keep using it. However, the authors found that most continued participating in the Twitter discussions for the duration of the course and beyond.
3. Model effective and appropriate Twitter use: Demonstrate for your students Twitter best practices by showing them how you use the application to connect with colleagues, share information, and ask and answer questions. It’s also a good idea to remind them that Twitter, like other social networking sites, is a public forum.
4. Build Twitter activity into assessment: To reinforce Twitter as a valuable resource, the authors encouraged students to use information and resources gathered through Twitter participation in their research papers and presentations, and assessed them on the accuracy and relevance of this information.
5. Stay active in Twitter: Continue to participate in the Twitter community you created even after the course ends. The authors found this enabled them to achieve a social presence needed to s

Twitter and the Global Brain - Google Docs

The prevailing model for many years of how synapses between neurons in the brain are altered during learning has been Hebbian learning, which can be summarized as "neurons that fire together, wire together". In other words, in two neurons fire at the same time, the connection(s) between them will strengthened.

But recent evidence in neuroscience shows the truth is actually an interested twist on this idea - a twist that could have important implications as a model of how global consciousness could emerge from real-time social media like Twitter.

In reality, synapses are modified according to a rule called Spike Time Dependent Plasticity (STDP). In a nutshell, STDP says that if two neurons fire (= spike) in rapid succession, the connection from the one that fires first to the one that fires second will be strengthened.

In other words, if neuron A reliably fires shortly before neuron B, the connection from A to B will get stronger, so that next time when neuron A fires, neuron B will be more likely to fire too. And the opposite holds as well. In this example, since the firing of neuron B lags behind neuron A, the strength of the connection in that direction (from B to A), will be weakened. You could think of it as the neural equivalent of the old saying 'the early bird catches the worm' - a neuron that fires first gains increasing influence on its downstream neighbors.

STDP is a simple idea, but it has been shown to be a surprisingly powerful way that the brain uses for rapid pattern recognition and classification [1][2]. It turns out that using STDP, neurons naturally learn to specialize in detecting certain patterns in their inputs, even in the presence of lots of noise.

So what in the world does this have to do with social networks? There is an intriguing analogy between networks of neurons operating by the STDP rule and the emerging structure and functioning of real-time social networks like Twitter.

IDEO Labs » Keynote Tweet: Participate in the backchannel of your own presentation

"Enter Keynote Tweet, a simple open-source script that provides the capacity to participate in the backchannel by combining Twitter with Apple Keynote. All you have to do is add text wrapped in [twitter] and [/twitter] tags in the presenter notes section of a slide. When that slide comes up in the presentation the script grabs that text and sends it to Twitter on your behalf."

Tweulogy

"Probably no need to mention that this cartoon was inspired by the Web 2.0 Expo debacle involving danah boyd, a Twitter backchannel projected onto a giant screen behind her, a speech that faced an uphill battle from the get-go, and a few audience members with some impulse control (and other) issues.

There’s a fascinating renegotiation going on between audiences and speakers. Twitter and backchannels are part of it, but I suspect something deeper is afoot. There’s a revolution sweeping all forms of communication – ask anyone who works for a newspaper or a record company – and maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that even something as seemingly timeless as public speaking would be affected.

But that doesn’t mean we have to be jerks about it."

What Will Be An Unpopular View Of Twitter At Conferences | Six Pixels of Separation - Marketing and Communications Blog - By Mitch Joel at Twist Image

"Yes, these people playing along on Twitter have the freedom to say whatever they want about anybody or anything, and yes, the conference organizers can make the decision as to whether or not they want to run the tweets live on the screen as they happen, but what's missing is what makes Twitter so great: the choice of who to follow (and who to ignore). Speakers don't deserve your attention, they definitely have to earn it, but for those who shelled out the shekels to attend this conference, it does take away from the experience if the audience's energy is more focused on the tweets on the wall behind the speaker than what's coming out of the speaker's mouths."

On Twitter and in the Workplace, It's Power to the Connectors - Rosabeth Moss Kanter - HarvardBusiness.org

"In the World According to Twitter, giving away access to information rewards the giver by building followers. The more followers, the more information comes to the giver to distribute, which in turn builds more followers. The process cannot be commanded or controlled; followers opt in and out as they choose. The results are transparent and purely quantitative; network size is all that matters. Networks of this sort are self-organizing and democratic but without any collective interaction.

The significance of Twitter is yet to be determined; it is a simple, impersonal, and transient application of technology. But very real network effects are a new source of power in and around organizations.

America in the 20th century was called a "society of organizations." Formal hierarchies with clear reporting relationships gave people their position and their power. In the 21st century, America is rapidly becoming a society of networks, even within organizations. Maintenance of organizations as structures is less important than assembling resources to get results, even if the assemblage itself is loose and perishable. "

About The Backchannel

"Armed with laptops and smartphones, audiences today are no longer sitting quietly taking notes during live presentations. Instead, they’re carving out a new space in the room called the backchannel, where people are online searching for resources, checking your facts, and connecting with others inside the room and out.

In this book, communications consultant Cliff Atkinson shows that if these new kinds of audience participation are embraced and the conversations properly handled, the outcome can be a new, more effective form of communicating. Whether you’re a host, presenter, or an audience member, Cliff will help you understand how this convergence of social forces is upending the presentation norm and how you can effectively manage the change."

Twitter StreamGraphs

"A StreamGraph is shown for the latest 1000 tweets which contain the search word. The default search query is 'data visualization' but a new one can be typed into the text box at the top of the application. You can also enter a Twitter ID preceded by the '@' symbol to see the latest tweets from that user. A parameter to the URL can be used to specify the initial search word. For example, use http://www.neoformix.com/Projects/TwitterStreamGraphs/view.php?q=coffee to see the latest tweets about coffee. "

China News: “Mr. Hu Jintao, Tear Down the Great Firewall!” (Updated with Video) | China Digital Times (CDT)

"To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, KulturProjekte Berlin set up a virtual “Berlin Twitter Wall” where individuals could post their thoughts on the occasion through use of a Twitter hashtag #FOTW. The site’s introduction further invites participants to “let us know which walls still have to come down to make our world a better place!” Chinese netizens have made their voices heard on this last point, and Chinese comments bashing the Great Firewall and Internet censorship now dominate the site. Selections of these comments are translated by CDT below:"

Killing straw men

"Paul Carr’s main point appears to be that citizen journalists can’t get stuff right, so they should shut up, and those that record events instead of helping to save lives should be ripped a new one. Yet his main assertions are unsupported by the facts, his interpretation riddled with holes and his straw men pathetically easy to demolish.

There are interesting debates to be had about technology, social media, citizen journalism and eye witness accounts, but sadly Carr’s post touches on none of them in any meaningful way. I am befuddled as to why people on Twitter are seizing on it as breaking new ground, as it simply doesn’t. "
