Is Google Too Powerful?

  • Few people, even Valley leaders who have faced the dominance of Microsoft firsthand, suggest that Google needs to be checked by government regulators. "Does ad-subsidized software threaten legacy businesses? Of course," says Jonathan Schwartz, CEO of Sun Microsystems (

Legislature to tackle emergency contraception bill | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

  • Yet many private and religious-affiliated hospitals won't offer emergency contraception prescriptions because of religious beliefs. A 2003 survey by the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, found that 60 percent of emergency rooms don't offer emergency contraception to rape victims.

"There are people or groups or faiths who see emergency contraception as a form of abortion," said Jennifer Banda, spokeswoman for the Texas Hospital Association.

New species of leopard with largest fangs in cat world discovered | the Daily Mail

  • Long thought to be identical to the clouded leopards living on mainland South East Asia, genetic analysis has shown that the Bornean big cat is in fact a separate species.

Scientists have counted at least 40 key differences in the DNA of the two felines - making the two species of clouded leopard almost as different as a lion is to a tiger.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) - Memorable quotes

  • Dr. Gonzo:
Hello? Hi Lucy, God bless. Yeah it's me. What? I dont know, I taught that bastard a lesson he'll never forget. What? No, not dead. But he won't be bothering anybody for a while. Yeah, I left him out there. I stomped him. I pulled all his teeth out. But we have a problem. That bastard cashed a bad cheque downstairs and gave you as a reference. They'll be looking for both of you. Yeah I know. You can't judge a book by it's cover... some people are just basically rotten. Well the last thing in the world you want to do is call this hotel again. They'll trace the call and put you straight behind bars. Yeah I'm moving to the tropicana right away... when I get a room I'll let you know which one it is... I gotta get off. They probably have this phone tapped baby... Yeah I know it's horrible but it's all over now.

    [stomps foot]

    Dr. Gonzo:
Oh my god... there's someone at the door. There's someone at the door!

    [yelling]

    Dr. Gonzo:
Ahh! Ahh! I'm innocent! It was Duke! It was Duke!

    [inaudible noises]

    Dr. Gonzo:
Ahh! Ahh! Don't put that thing on me! Aaah! Aaah! Aaah!

    [hangs up]

    Dr. Gonzo:
Well, that's the last we should be hearing from Lucy man. She's probably stuffing herself down the incinerator right now. You know what we need? We need some opium.

The universe is a string-net liquid - fundamentals - 15 March 2007 - New Scientist

  • In the experiment, electrons moving in the interface between two semiconductors behaved as though they were made up of particles with only a fraction of the electron's charge. This so-called fractional quantum hall effect (FQHE) suggested that electrons may not be elementary particles after all. However, it soon became clear that electrons under certain conditions can congregate in a way that gives them the illusion of having fractional charge - an explanation that earned Laughlin, Horst Störmer and Daniel Tsui the Nobel prize (New Scientist, 31 January 1998, p 36).
