Creationism and the Early Church - Chapter 3

date of creation and day-age theory in the early church fathers

creation creationism

  • Progressive creationist Dr. Hugh Ross interprets the
evidence presented above rather differently. He argues that the fathers
believed that the days of Genesis were a thousand years in length and not 24
literal hours.(7) Ross cites two writers in support of his
position: Justin Martyr and Irenaeus of Lyons.
  • For
him the days of Genesis were 24 hours long and served as a pattern for the
    history of the world.

Creationism and the Early Church - Chapter 1

  • In view of the range of often contradictory views expressed
by the church fathers it is wise to be cautious when making an appeal to
tradition. As far as the Roman Catholic position is concerned there are very
few subjects on which the church fathers were unanimous and, that being the
case, it is not very helpful as a test for truth. Looking back we can see that
many of the fathers were mistaken (for a variety of reasons) in their
interpretations. Centuries ago the Reformers recognised this and were forced to
qualify their appeal to them by testing them against the touchstone of
    Scripture.
  • It is often argued that the early church fathers were better
able to understand the teachings of the New Testament because they shared the
same background, culture and language as those too whom it was originally
addressed.(16) While there is undoubtedly much truth in such
a view, it can be overstated, especially with regard to the later church
    fathers.(17)

Creationism and the Early Church - Chapter 7

  • The modern idea that science and religion are contradictory
has its origins in the work of John William Draper (1811-1882), especially his
History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science, published in
1874.(15) A participant in the debates in the British
Association and a witness of the confrontation between Thomas Huxley and Bishop
Samuel Wilberforce, Draper attempted to read that debate and his own
evolutionary presuppositions back into history. Draper’s revisionist
interpretation was followed by that of Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918) who
produced a two volume work on the same theme.(16) White
pictured the Greek philosophers as forerunners of evolutionary theory,(17) an argument which has been repeated many times since by
both evolutionists(18) and creationists.(19) He popularised the idea that Christianity and science have
been locked in conflict since the dawn of civilisation, claiming that the rise
of Christianity was responsible for the demise of Greek science.(20)
  • The vast majority of the church fathers accepted without
question the commonly accepted belief that the world was spherical in shape
which had been maintained by the Greeks since the fourth century BC.(43) Basil of Caesarea wrote that the shape of the earth was of
no great importance compared with other things that the Scriptures are clear
about.(44) Even if such matters were of no importance to him,
he seems to have accepted the generally held view that the universe consisted
of a series of concentric circles, which the spherical earth lying at the
    centre.(45)

The antediluvian patriarchs and the Sumerian King List

  • When the kingdom durations
of the antediluvian section are expressed in an early sexagesimal numerical
system, all durations except two are expressed as multiples of 602.
A simple tally of the ciphers used yields six 10x602 signs,
six 602 signs and six 60 signs.

The lives of the biblical patriarchs, however, have a precision
of one year. If Adam and Noah are not included (as in the King List),
and the lives of the patriarchs are similarly rounded to two digits, the
sum of the lives has six 103 signs, six 102 signs
and six 10 signs. In addition, if the number representing the sum of
the ages was wrongly assumed as having been written in the sexagesimal
system, the two totals become numerically equivalent.

Adrian Rogers on Free Lunches | The Beacon

  • Let me say a word here that may sound political.  I hope not, because I believe it’s moral and biblical.  You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the industrious out of it.  You don’t multiply wealth by dividing it.  Government cannot give anything to anybody that it doesn’t first take from somebody else.

Whenever somebody receives something without working for it, somebody else has to work for it without receiving.  The worst thing that can happen to a nation is for half of the people to get the idea they don’t have to work because somebody else will work for them, and the other half to get the idea that it does no good to work because they don’t get to enjoy the fruit of their labor. (Adrian Rogers, Ten Secrets for a Successful Family: A Perfect 10 for Homes that Win.  Crossway Books, 1998, p. 138).

HOW RIGHT DID THIS GUY HAVE IT - Nealz Nuze on boortz.com

  • "by and large our young people do not know either the importance or the value of honest labor."
  • "You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."
