Lifehacker - Five Best Online Image Editors - Image Editing

Five online applications for editing images: Sumo Paint, Photoshop Express, Pixlr, Picnik, & Aviary Phoenix. All have at least some free options, although premium accounts are required for some features.

Mahara

  • Open source eportfolio application which includes some social networking capability. Within your portfolio, you can add a resumes, files, images, etc. Then, you create views using some of those items geared towards a specific purpose. You can do different portfolios for different job types of different classes.

Screencast-O-Matic

  • Web-based screencast application. It's in beta, and the quality isn't as high as it might be with more mature, professional applications, but it's free and quick.

Using Google Notebook, Google Reader, and Firefox

  • Wes Fryer summarizes the uses of Google Notebook, Google Reader, and Firefox. Specifically, he talks about the educational research applications of Google Notebook.

  • You can also limit who gets to view a notebook by selecting different email addresses. This could be beneficial in a classroom context, when a student just wants to share access to their notebook with a few partners and the teacher, but not the entire class or the world.
  • Overall, however, I am VERY impressed with the Google Notebook tool and the possibilities it presents! I think it has HUGE applications for educational research, particularly because it permits such easy harvesting of links, quotations, and images with the date and originating URL/website included in the notebook clipping.
