This image was in a bunch of miscellaneous negatives acquired from Germany - and is in my vintage "found photo" collection. The image is evocative for me. It has a quality of... I don't know - a cardboard child's print from the 30s, toy-like from that era. The little girl in this image conveys the impression of being a doll (she's actually not - I have other negatives from this photo session). Clearly the photographer focussed on the mid- to background rather thanall of the intended subjects of the shot. Unless s/he was as unconventional as I am - and actually wanted to have the focus like that, perhaps - I'm sure s/he was none too happy when the negatives were developed. That, and the unphotogenic (for the purpose of a nice portrait, I mean) expression on the little girl's face, likely made this shot a bust for the photographer. Enter this collector in the next millenium. For me, those stated detracting elements for a nice portrait actually enhance this image for me. The resulting image is mesmerizing. The unintended flip-flopped focus is rather disorienting - in a good way. The doll-like impression of the little girl makes her part of the set-up scenery like the table & chair, the bear, and all the brickerbrack on the tabletop. The only element that's in focus other than the far background is the mother's partly-visible head - her head is the only sharp-focus element among the blurry mid- and foreground elements, and it helps make the image as powerful as it is because of it. The visible part of her head alone, as it appears, is a work of art in itself and would hold up well as a crop of that alone, as I see it (though I can't say exactly why at the moment... it'll have to come later after mulling it). I plan on posting two, possibly three other shots from this photo session sometime in the future. I'll be sure to link this image to them when I do.
