The semantic web is really, in its simplest form, the idea that information on the web should be stored in databases structured like graphs.

In a graph, the pieces of information are called “nodes,” and the connections between nodes are called “edges.”

Graphs are collections of pieces of information and the connection between those pieces of information.

The essence of why the relational model doesn’t handle the more dynamic model of knowledge as opposed to information, is that relational databases are built around the idea that the relationship between objects is *built into* the objects.

The concept of having relationships between objects be separate from the objects themselves is the core concept behind what is known in computer science as graph theory.

Think revenue. Web 2.0 solved the cost problem. The next era will solve the revenue problem in basic simple ways that everybody can understand. Making money online will happen if you enable other people to make money online.

The key lesson for entrepreneurs is that the programmable web enables you to pick and choose. It did not use to be like that. You had to choose IBM or Univac on mainframes, DEC or HP in minicomputers, Windows or Unix in Client/Server. Each decision had far-reaching consequences. You were really locked-in.
That is no longer true in the programmable web. You can use Amazon web services, Google Web Toolkit, LAMP stack from Red Hat, YouTube for videos and any number of specialized APIs. The power to create sophisticated, complex web based systems has grown exponentially.

The basic idea behind Semantic Web technology is that by signaling what kind of content you are publishing on an item-by-item or field-by-field basis, publishers can help make the meaning of their text readable by machines. If machines are able to determine the meaning of the content on a page, then our human brains don't have to waste time determining, for example, which search results go beyond containing our keywords and actually mean what we are looking for.

What Does This Mean?
Here's one example of what that could mean: Today, a web service might work very hard to scour the internet to discover all the book reviews written on various sites, by friends of mine, who live in Europe. That would be so hard that no one would probably try it. The suite of technologies Yahoo! is moving to support will make such searches trivial. Once publishers start including things like hReview, FOAF and geoRSS in their content then Yahoo!, and other sites leveraging Yahoo! search results, will be able to ask easily what it is we want to do with those book reviews. Say hello to a new level of innovation.
