This article examines the relationship between Open Access to the scholarly literature and innovation. It traces the ideas of “end to end” network principles in the Internet and the World Wide Web and applies them to the scholarly biomedical literature. And the article argues for the importance of relieving not just price barriers but permission barriers.

Why bother about openness and licensing for data? After all they don’t matter in themselves: what we really care about are things like the progress of human knowledge or the freedom to understand and share.

Processing (BETA) library to communicate with MySQL (or any other SQL) databases.

note that due to java security restrictions this will not work with applets "out of the box"
and that many remote mysql-servers will only allow local access ("localhost")
or connections from trusted hosts. (see notes. )

also note that you should have some experience with SQL to put, change
and retrieve data from the database.

JSON, or JavaScript Object notation, is a lightweight data interchange format whose simplicity has resulted in widespread use among web developers. JSON is easy to read and write; you can parse it using any programming language, and its structures map directly to data structures used in most programming languages.

The Google Data APIs can provide feed data in JSON format as well as in Atom and RSS formats. This document describes how to request JSON output from services that support the Google data APIs and how to use JSON in your applications.

Freebase provides full data dumps of all the current facts and assertions in our system. You've always been able to use our developer API to access this information, and we've recently made it easy to export tabular data about a single Freebase type through our website, but now for the first time you can grab everything in one convenient package.

Freebase data dumps are complete, general-purpose extracts of the Freebase data in a variety of formats. We will be releasing a fresh data dump every three months.

Graphviz Filter is a fun little filter that treats input text as Graphviz DOT syntax, converts it using Graphviz tools to the requested format(s) and embeds it in HTML. It's useful to quickly create graphs dynamically from within Drupal nodes. A particularly exciting application is to create an input format consisting of PHP code followed by Graphviz Filter, thereby allowing one to write code that outputs a DOT file, which is then rendered to HTML. For example, one could create a visual taxonomy tree with nodes hanging from the terms, and each visual node would be clickable (using the URL Graphviz attribute) to point to the actual Drupal node. Stuff like that!
