- - This is hilarious. "Within the safe confines of the classroom"! The author tacitly accepts one of the very factors that works against transformational learning: the so-called "safety" of the classroom.
    1) Students in higher education are nor children.
    2) it assumes that transformational learning has to hurt deeply.
    It is possible to cultivate an open and questioning perspective on the world around us that is conducive to transformational learning, one that does not stop at the boundaries of the classroom or the lecture hall. - on 2009-06-01

- - You don't need such an artifical means to generate interest in new subjects. Is this not an eloquent example of one of those "good" ideas that is totally counter productive?
    I'm not at all sure that the institution "forcing" a "new subject" on people is a satisfactory solution, especially when you know that the personal interest in and pertinence of the subject is a major motivation to learning. Not only does such a solution not really favour curiousity but it remains completely "within the box" by thinking in terms of "subjects". The world is not made of "subjects" and neither should learning be. - on 2009-06-01

- - The author pursues the misunderstanding of what transformational learning is by talking about grades. Grades are a market place metaphor designed to stimulate people to learn rather like money is seen as an incentive for peope to work. And grades enable learning to be "bought and sold" as being the equivalent of learning. Grades contribute largely to the disembodiment of learning, removing the incentive due to curiosity and a thirst to learna nd know. - on 2009-06-01
