The Clever Sheep: Twitter Bingo
"Earlier today, I found myself reflecting on the variety of positive professional interactions I've had on Twitter in recent days. As an illustration of the great many ways an educator can put Twitter to use, I've just created a mock-up of Twitter Bingo for Education."
The 7 Step Quick-Start Guide for New Tweeters | SimpleK12
"At last count, Twitter was being used by about 34.5 billion people (yes, bigger than the entire population of Earth and all the other planets in our solar system combined… but who’s counting?) and a big chunk of those users are still trying to figure out what they want to do with the thing."

apophenia: Twitter: "pointless babble" or peripheral awareness + social grooming?
"Studies like this one by Pear Analytics drive me batty. They concluded that 40.55% of the tweets they coded are pointless babble; 37.55% are conversational; 8.7% have "pass along value"; 5.85% are self-promotional; 3.75% are spam; and ::gasp:: only 3.6% are news. I challenge each and every one of you to record every utterance that comes out of your mouth (and that of everyone you interact with) for an entire day. And then record every facial expression and gesture. You will most likely find what communications scholars found long ago - people are social creatures and a whole lot of what they express is phatic communication. (Phatic expressions do social work rather than conveying information... think "Hi" or "Thank you".) Now, turn all of your utterances over to an analytics firm so that they can code everything that you've said. I think that you'll be lucky if only 40% of what you say constitutes "pointless babble" to a third party ear."
85+ Cool Sites I Found In October Via Twitter | Blogging & Technology | So You Want To Teach?
"I have been getting more and more into sharing information via Twitter recently. With 1,300 RSS subscribers, and only 850 Twitter followers, I know that not all of my readers are getting all of the links that I share. I thought it might be fun to share with you some of the links that I came across last month and shared on Twitter. If you aren’t following me on Twitter yet, you should start: @sywtt"
Teaching With Twitter: Not for the Faint of Heart - Technology - The Chronicle of Higher Education
"As Mr. Chakravarty paces the front of a stadium-style lecture hall, wearing a wireless microphone to make sure his lecture reaches the nosebleed seats, some students crack jokes anonymously in an official Web forum. The course is one of two at Purdue that are testing homemade software called Hotseat, which lets students key in questions from their cellphones or laptops, using Twitter or Facebook. A constant stream of comments, often tangential, accompanies his talks. An incident of cheating came up early in the semester—a student asked classmates for a quiz answer. During one session this month, students took over the back channel to ask the professor to cancel class Thanksgiving week so they could have a longer vacation. "So with 41 votes are we not having class that monday of Thanksgiving?" asked one hopeful student after others had endorsed the sentiment. (The class is still on.)"
Twitter’s Tweet Smell Of Success | Nielsen Wire
"Twitterers (a.k.a. Tweeters) are not primarily teens or college students as you might expect. In fact, in February the largest age group on Twitter was 35-49; with nearly 3 million unique visitors, comprising almost 42 percent of the site’s audience. We found that the majority of people visit Twitter.com while at work, with 62 percent of the combo unique audience accessing the site from work only versus 35 percent that accessed it from home only."
Newsletter - Issue 17 - Twittering the student experience
"While the largest age group on Twitter is the 35-49 range (Nielsen News, 2009), the service is rapidly growing in popularity among younger users. The most recent data (based on self-disclosed age) suggests that 65% of Twitter users are under the age of 25 (Sysomos Inc, 2009). There is also anecdotal evidence that younger users are sophisticated in switching between social networks (Boyd 2009). One year ago, a Twitter search for 'University of Leicester' revealed little of interest. More recent searches reveal a growing volume of conversation between existing students, often across institutional boundaries, and also from prospective students, commenting on perceptions of the University and Higher Education (HE)in general."
Who Should I Follow
WhoShouldiFollow looks at who your Twitter friends follow to suggest new people. By adjusting the sliders on the results page, you can give greater preference in the ranking to less popular Twitter users, or those who are near you.
The algorithm is an item-to-item collaborative filter, somewhat similar to how Amazon makes recommendations.
