Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, an accused Qaeda commander whose torture was outsourced by the C.I.A. to Egypt. His fabricated tales of Saddam’s biological and chemical W.M.D. — and of nonexistent links between Iraq and Al Qaeda — were cited by President Bush in his fateful Oct. 7, 2002, Cincinnati speech ginning up the war and by Mr. Powell in his subsequent United Nations presentation on Iraqi weaponry. Two F.B.I. officials told Ms. Mayer that Mr. al-Libi later explained his lies by saying: “They were killing me. I had to tell them something.”

No less destructive are the false confessions inevitably elicited from tortured detainees. The avalanche of misinformation since 9/11 has compromised prosecutions, allowed other culprits to escape and sent the American military on wild-goose chases. The coerced “confession” to the murder of the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, to take one horrific example, may have been invented to protect the real murderer.

Tags: no_tag

Posted by: knowyourtrade

Home swapping provides a break from pricey holidays - Scotsman.com Business

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

The obvious downside to home swapping is that someone else will be living in your home, sleeping in your bed and potentially damaging your property. However, as you are staying in their home at the same time most swaps go without a hitch.

"All the UK agencies we spoke to told us that serious complaints were few and far between. Those they do receive are generally down to incompatible cleaning standards," said consumer group Which? when it looked into holiday exchanges earlier this year.

"If things do go seriously wrong, the agency will act as a go-between. However, the exchange system is based on mutual trust, and the agency bears no legal responsibility. Members may be struck off if it is believed they have broken an agreement, or even abused the system, but that is of little comfort if you have a bad experience."

Another downside of home swapping is that your home insurer may not cover you for accidental damage, theft or vandalism while strangers are staying in your home. Insurer eSure confirms it wouldn't cover your building and its contents if swappers were staying in your home; a view uSwitch says is shared by most, if not all, insurance companies.

"The main reason is that accidental damage cover is there to cover damage to your property by your family and friends – such as wine accidentally being poured onto your television or smashed lighting if a game on the Wii became too animated," says an eSure spokesperson.

"It is not there to cover an eventually that has a definite outcome: if you allow a stranger to use your home then the likelihood of damage is almost certain. Friends and family will take due care in your home and with your belongings. People who don't know you have no reason to treat your personal property as if it were their own."

Tags: insurance

Posted by: knowyourtrade

Swapping homes helps people see faraway places

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

While both Kushins and Nicodemus said no one has reported theft or serious crimes during exchanges, they do sometimes hear about houses left messy

It's hard to know how many Bay Area residents have done home exchanges, but it's clear that the Bay Area is a hotbed of activity. Kushins said about 400 of his listings come from the Bay Area. The directors of the U.S. chapter of another home exchange company, InterVac, are based in the Bay Area.

Another Bay Area couple run a home exchange directory and rating Web site as well as a trade group for home exchange companies, complete with ethics rules and mediation for groups that feel their clients have been poached by upstart clubs.

Why is the Bay Area so popular? Simple, said Nicodemus. San Francisco is a world city.

"New York City, San Francisco and Paris are the three huge, huge areas for home exchange," she estimated. "Wherever you want to go, you can get an exchange if you live in the Bay Area. That's how we got to Paris and Mexico. It wasn't because we were looking to go. It's because people approached us. We get 10 to 20 home exchangers a week writing to us."

New clubs seek to match home exchangers interested exclusively in golf or who want to swap motor homes or sailboats, said Leslie Nicodemus of Tiburon, a self-proclaimed "exchange diva" of KnowYourTrade.com. Know Your Trade is a kind of Yelp for home exchange clubs. It connects prospective home exchangers with clubs and encourages members to rate and review clubs.

Tags: no_tag

Posted by: knowyourtrade

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

The primary advantage of finding vacation homes through a home exchange is that you have no accommodations costs. Zero. Plus, you’ll save considerable money on meals, since you’ll have the option of cooking at your vacation home. In addition, there’s no resentment factor: your home doesn’t have to remain empty while you pay premium prices for a hotel room. You’ll also have added security for your own home while you’re on vacation, since someone will be staying there. Ultimately, people who regularly vacation with a home exchange find that they can visit exciting new place worldwide at a fraction of the normal price.

Tags: articles

Posted by: knowyourtrade

There are some great home exchange programs. These programs help people make arrangements to exchange accommodations. Since the accommodations are often the most substantial expense of any trip, a home exchange can provide a fantastic honeymoon on a budget. There are people looking to exchange homes in Europe for similar accommodations in the United States. A honeymoon couple could trade their home for one in London, Paris or Berlin.

Tags: articles

Posted by: knowyourtrade

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Propertyfinder.com asked nearly 1000 people about home swapping and revealed that it is surprisingly popular. Half of respondents knew about home swapping and 18 per cent said it was something they would consider, although less than 3 per cent had actually done it.

The people most likely to do a home swap were between the ages of 31 and 35 with 63.8 per cent of this age group saying they would consider exchanging homes for a holiday.

However, unlike the film, single people emerged as the people least likely to consider a home swap, perhaps opting for more sociable holidays. People with families were the most enthusiastic respondents, citing affordability as the most popular reason for choosing a home swapping holiday.
