IEEP and our partner, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) have published a report on “Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Policies in Europe and the United States”. This report includes the main conclusions of our joint project - Transatlantic Platform for Action on the Global Environment (T-PAGE). T-PAGE has provided a platform for debate to stimulate dialogue and exchange of experiences between environmental NGOs, academia and other interested civil society organisations in the U.S. and EU. The project has been co-funded by the European Commission within the framework of its programme to promote transatlantic dialogues at the non-governmental level.

If mines on land are gradually becoming depleted, could the oceans become our new mines? There have been several proposals for mining the oceans' floor, but that is just an extension of conventional mining and, besides, the task has proved to be complex and expensive. The real change of paradigm, instead, is in extracting ions dissolved in seawater.

Traditional education has shifted towards new methods of teaching and learning through the proliferation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The continuous advances in technology enable the realisation of a more distributed structure of knowledge transfer. This becomes critically important for developing countries that lack the resources and infrastructure for implementing cutting-edge education practices. The two main themes of technology in education for developing countries focus either on aspects of technological support for traditional methods and localised processes, or on the investigation of how such technologies may assist distance learning. Commonly such efforts are threefold, relating to content delivery, assessment and provision of feedback. This paper focuses on issues regarding the implementation of e-learning in developing countries and particularly those aspects of Computer-Aided Assessment (CAA) that could be tailored to satisfy the needs of a limited educational infrastructure. The primary contribution of this paper is a proposed methodology for supporting both formative and summative CAA.

The IAEA has revised upwards its nuclear power generation projections to 2030, while at the same time it reported that nuclear´s share of global electricity generation dropped another percentage point in 2007 to 14%. This compares to the nearly steady share of 16% to 17% that nuclear power maintained for almost two decades, from 1986 through 2005.

DutchNews.nl - Study into Dutch-Danish power cable

The Dutch and Danish power grid operators have announced they are to carry out a feasibility study into the possibility of an underwater electricity cable between the two countries, reports ANP news service.

The two firms say the so-called Cobra cable will facilitate the use of renewable power.

'Strong connections between European countries can significantly increase how much wind power can be distributed on European grids,' Peter Jorgensen, one of the directors of Enereginet is quoted as saying.

On Thursday the NorNed cable between the Netherlands and Norway – at 580 kms the longest underwater power cable in the world – was officially opened by the Dutch economic affairs minister Mara van der Hoeven. The cable has been operational since May.
