When Young Teachers Go Wild on the Web

It's almost like Googling someone: Log on to Facebook. Join the Washington, D.C., network. Search the Web site for your favorite school system. And then watch the public profiles of 20-something teachers unfurl like gift wrap on the screen, revealing a sense of humor that can be overtly sarcastic or unintentionally unprofessional -- or both.

Tags: privacy literacy googleable netbook

Posted by: willrich

The Internet's new Dr. Spock?

Comments:

Quote: The research suggests that kids who live online understand the process
by which knowledge is produced and shared in an online environment,
whereas those kids who come in within 10 minutes, they're trying to get
the answer and get off. So they're not as critical of a corporate Web
site, for example. That's just one example of some fundamental
inequalities in access to social skills and culture competencies
between the information-haves and have-nots.

Note: Interesting interview with Henry Jenkins, who I personally think articulates the moment very clearly. I find that access gap as it relates to literacy to be really interesting.
posted by willrich

Tags: education literacy schools shifts

Posted by: willrich

The initiative is part of a project by the search engine giant, based in Mountain View, Calif., to put books from major libraries on its Web site. The New York Public Library, the University of California, the University of Michigan, Harvard University, Stanford University and Oxford University are among the participants.
