President: Ukraine to accelerate nuclear power development

Ukraine will accelerate the development of nuclear power in a bid to reduce dependence on imported energy, visiting Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said here Tuesday.

More nuclear reactors will be brought into operation in Ukraine by 2013, said Yushchenko, who was on a one-day visit to Vienna.

A worker at Ukraine's embassy in Germany has been arrested on charges of attempted smuggling of radioactive materials.

The man and the security manager of a local bank were detained near the central Ukrainian city of Cherkassy with radioactive metals in their possession worth 3.1 million euros ($4.9 million), said police, as reported by the Interfax news agency on Monday, July 7.

KIEV, June 6 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine's state nuclear power utility Energoatom has admitted that a small leak occurred at water-moderated reactor in the country's northwest on May 29, but said no radioactive materials were released.

The announcement follows rumors circulated in the Ukrainian media over the past few days of rising radiation levels in the area. Energoatom released a statement on June 3 saying the country's four nuclear plants were running smoothly.

Greenfield, PvT Capital join forces to clean up Chernobyl nuclear contamination in CIS radiation zones

German bioenergy expert PvT Capital GmbH and Irish bioethanol developer Greenfield Project Management Ltd today announced their agreement to jointly develop Greenfield's proposed ethanol refineries in Belarus and to make this the first step in creating giant biomass refineries capable of producing a range of biofuels.

PvT Capital's agreement to partner with Greenfield also brings on board the Center for Environmental
Research (UFZ) of the world-renowned Helmholtz Association of Research Centers..

MINSK — Several thousand supporters of Belarus' opposition marched through Minsk on Saturday to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident and protest an alleged government coverup of the disaster's consequences.

Many of the 3,000 marchers expressed particular dismay over the government's policy of assigning recent university graduates to work in areas contaminated by the explosion.

Reactor No. 4 at Chernobyl, in what is now northern Ukraine, exploded on April 26, 1986, spewing radiation over a large swath of the former Soviet Union and much of northern Europe in the world's worst nuclear accident.

KIEV (AFP) — Ukraine paid tribute Saturday to victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster 22 years ago while anti-nuclear demonstrators at home and abroad also recalled the worst civilian nuclear disaster in history.

A group of Ukrainians led by President Viktor Yushchenko laid a wreath during the night at a monument to the victims of the catastrophe in which a reactor exploded one night in April 1986.

As the Charter’97 press center has learnt from parents, whose children attend the Minsk kindergarten No 111, their kids were not allowed to go out yesterday. Teachers told the parents it was an order of the director, who had received a call from a higher-level agency.

The exact reason of this decision is unknown, but staff of the kindergarten says it may be connected with an accident on a nuclear plant in one of the neighbouring countries.

Kyiv Post. Officials confident Chornobyl poses no safety threat

Private and government officials responsible for the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant’s safety said they are gradually making progress.

It’s been 22 years since the world’s worst nuclear accident occurred on April 26, and 200 tons of radioactive material remains entombed in the fourth reactor.

Despite warnings from nuclear watchdogs that Chornobyl still poses an environmental hazard, officials said confidently the plant is secure from any further accidents.

AFP: Nuclear waste storage inaugurated in Chernobyl

KIEV (AFP) — Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko Wednesday inaugurated a nuclear waste storage and processing centre in the contaminated zone around the Chernobyl nuclear station ahead of the catastrophe's 22nd anniversary, his press service said.

The centre's first module, constructed with the European Commission's aid, would be launched by the end of the year, Valentin Melnichenko, a project official, told AFP.
