Russian strategic bombers may soon be deployed at airbases in Cuba, Venezuela and Algeria as a response to the U.S. missile shield in Europe and NATO's expansion, Russian daily Izvestia said on Thursday.

Moscow has strongly opposed the possible deployment by the U.S. of 10 interceptor missiles in Poland and an accompanying tracking radar in the Czech Republic as a threat to its national security. Washington says the defenses are needed to deter a possible strike from Iran, or other "rogue" states.

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Tags: nuclear n-weapons proliferations sam russia

Posted by: theenergynet

Nuclear power's resurgence in the United States is tied to a surprisingly effective program that is helping to make the world a safer place from nuclear weapons.

Known as the "megatons to megawatts" program, it has led to the elimination of huge stockpiles of nuclear weapons materials, thus making it much more difficult for rogue countries and terrorist groups to obtain them.

Tags: nuclear energy reprocessing mox russia

Posted by: theenergynet

A legislative provision that would have linked US import limits on Russian low-enriched uranium to additional downblending of Russian high-enriched uranium was not included in a funding bill passed by the House of Representatives late Thursday. The provision, which was written by Pete Domenici, a Republican senator from New Mexico, was included in the Senate version of the bill.

Tags: nuclear energy fuel-cycle uranium policy

Posted by: theenergynet

MOSCOW. (RIA Novosti political commentator Andrei Kislyakov) - U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in his address to officers at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia that Russia was focused on strengthening its nuclear capabilities rather than building up its regular armed forces, which makes maintaining the U.S. nuclear arsenal increasingly important.

Tags: nuclear n-weapons proliferation us russia

Posted by: theenergynet

MOSCOW, June 16 (RIA Novosti) - Russian nuclear power agency Rosatom dismissed on Monday rumors circulating of a radioactive leak from two plants in northwest and south Russia.

Bogus e-mail messages on June 15 said that there had been alleged radioactive leaks at the Leningrad nuclear power station, in northwest Russia, and the Volgodonsk nuclear power plant, in the south of the country, a spokesman for the company said.

Tags: nuclear energy accident leak russia

Posted by: theenergynet

Sevmash in trouble

The Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast, was on the agenda when the Russian government yesterday discussed the country’s military industrial complex. The yard, one of the biggest in Russia, has proved unable to cope with three major ongoing construction projects.

Sevmash, one of two major shipyards in Russia’s northern engineering capital of Severodvinsk, has become a headache for the Russian government. Not only has the plant ended up in trouble because of its delays and cost overruns with the aircraft carrier “Admiral Gorshkov”, which is to be sold to the Indian Navy. Sevmash is also significantly behind schedules with the nuclear-powered submarine “Yuri Dolgorukii” – the first of Russia’s fourth generation submarines.

Tags: nuclear n-weapons russia energy nuke.news

Posted by: theenergynet
