As revealed in The Whitehaven News, the option of storing spent fuel in underground vaults, is becoming a possible alternative to reprocessing for Britain’s expected fleet of new nuclear reactors and a graphic illustration of the mountain of spoil, as large as the Egyptian pyramids, that would be created by an underground repository has been reproduced by a Welsh council that feared such a repository coming to Wales.

Tags: nuclear energy fuel-cycle n-waste uk

Posted by: theenergynet

Nukes: A Gorgeous Monument to Radioactive Decay

What do you do when you have a barn-sized pile of nuclear waste materials that you have to store for 100 years while it loses its toxicity? In the Netherlands, the answer was to stick it inside a giant art project: specifically, this orange building called the Habog Facility, covered in physics formulas by Einstein and Planck. Every twenty years, the building will be repainted in a lighter color to symbolize the slowly decaying radiation in the waste.

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Tags: nuclear energy fuel-cycle n-waste netherlands

Posted by: theenergynet

The Pentagon Is America's Biggest Polluter | Environment | AlterNet

The nation's biggest polluter isn't a corporation. It's the Pentagon. Every year the Department of Defense churns out more than 750,000 tons of hazardous waste -- more than the top three chemical companies combined.

Yet the military remains largely exempt from compliance with most federal and state environmental laws, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Pentagon's partner in crime, is working hard to keep it that way.

Tags: ecology n-waste perchlorate us nuke.news

Posted by: theenergynet

It's hard to find Nevada residents who still think Yucca Mountain is the biggest issue in the state, but this election year might just put it back on the map.

After all, Sen. John McCain is solidly behind the proposed nuclear waste dump, even though he sometimes wears an environmentalist hat and at other times a fiscal conservative hat.

Yucca Mountain could be a huge environmental disaster -- and it's already cost enough billions of dollars to actually deserve the honor of federal government boondoggle.

Tags: nuclear energy fuel-cycle n-waste yucca-mountain

Posted by: theenergynet

AUSTIN -- With eight power plants on the drawing board, Texas could lead the way in an American renaissance of nuclear power, according to industry leaders and some policymakers.

Four power companies -- New Jersey-based NRG Energy, Amarillo Power, Dallas-based Luminant and Chicago-based Exelon -- have proposed building nuclear plants in Texas. That would increase the reactors in the state from four to 12, and more than triple its nuclear output.

Tags: nuclear energy n-waste fuel-cycle tx

Posted by: theenergynet

BOISE, Idaho - Eight Western states on Thursday derailed EnergySolutions' plans to import nuclear cleanup waste from Italy and bury some of it at the company's Utah landfill.
Members of the Northwest Compact on Low-level Radioactive Waste voted unanimously here to tighten the compact's contract with the Salt Lake City nuclear waste company to make it clear that foreign waste is not permitted. They also closed a loophole that has allowed past shipments of foreign waste to be buried in Utah after being processed at the company's Tennessee processing plant.

Tags: nuclear energy fuel-cycle n-waste transporation

Posted by: theenergynet

BOISE — The EnergySolutions proposal to store radioactive waste from Italy in Utah received a unanimous thumbs down Thursday from the Northwest Interstate Compact on Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management.

Utah's compact committee member Bill Sinclair, picked by Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., read from a "clarifying" resolution after a 90-minute closed session to discuss a federal lawsuit EnergySolutions filed this week. Representatives on the eight-state compact all voted to approve the resolution.

Tags: nuclear energy fuel-cycle n-waste transportation

Posted by: theenergynet

New Reactors and Waste Dump for east shore of Lake Huron

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission released draft guidelines on April 7th for the environmental review of two separate projects proposed for the Bruce Nuclear Station near Kincardine, on the eastern shore of Lake Huron.

Bruce Power Inc. and Ontario Power Generation are the proponents for the projects. Bruce Power is proposing the construction of up to four new nuclear reactors at the existing Bruce Nuclear Site, located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, north of Kincardine. The project is expected to generate approximately 4,000 megawatts of electricity to the Ontario grid.

Tags: canada nuclear reactors fuel-cycle n-waste

Posted by: theenergynet

State orders radiation tests at Weymouth Neck waste site - The Boston Globe

State officials have decided that the 68-acre Weymouth Neck hazardous waste site should be tested for radiation contamination.

The decision marks a change in direction for Department of Environmental Protection regulators who earlier this year received a statement from ConocoPhillips, the site's previous owner, indicating that the company was satisfied that its cleanup effort was complete and the site posed no significant risk to people living or working on it.

Tags: nuclear energy n-waste fuel-cycle cleanup

Posted by: theenergynet

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says 21 years after agreeing to remove radioactive waste at the Western New York Nuclear Service Center in West Valley, the federal government has not met expectations.

The state agency released a report May 7, saying the U.S. Department of Energy has yet to reach the first regulatory milepost -- the completion of a final environmental impact statement at the facility, which has been closed since 1975.

Tags: nuclear energy fuel-cycle uranium plutonium

Posted by: theenergynet
