NEW ORLEANS, May 26 (UPI) -- Attorneys have reached an agreement with ExxonMobil over claims the oil company exposed a Louisiana community to radioactive waste, settlement papers reveal.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Monday that the case relates to contamination allegedly left from three decades of offshore pipe-cleaning east of the Harvey Canal.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Wednesday threw out a Washington state law barring the federal government from adding radioactive waste to the Hanford nuclear disposal site until existing contamination is cleaned up.

The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that federal law pre-empts the state from halting waste disposal at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, a 586-square-mile (1,520-square-km) site along the Columbia River in southeastern Washington.

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - The sponsor of the Hanford waste initiative hopes the state will appeal court decisions that give the federal government cleanup authority.

Heart of America Northwest Executive Director Gerald Pollet says the Energy Department can't be trusted to do the work.

A spokeswoman for the state attorney general's office, Janelle Guthrie, says there's no decision on an appeal.

U.S. District Judge Richard Matsch on Monday agreed to release some documents in a long-sealed case involving the Rocky Flats grand jury, but it was a hollow victory for jurors.

Matsch ruled that court filings, memos and other ancillary information be released.

But he kept a lid on the testimony of jurors who think the Justice Department undermined their 2 1/2-year criminal investigation and instead cut a deal for an $18.5 million fine against Rockwell International, the operator of the former nuclear weapons plant in Jefferson County.
