A Blind Man's Guide to Energy Policy - Business - redOrbit

The broad vision needed to transform the energy system will develop only when narrowly focused constituencies learn to see through the eyes of others. The United States has seemingly reached a consensus that energy is a serious problem. Unfortunately, there is no consensus on the solution. Three major constituencies are dominating discussion of the problem, and each approaches the issue from a different viewpoint. The constituency that is worried about climate change sees profligate use of fossil fuel that has dramatically changed our atmosphere. The energy security group sees dangerous reliance on foreign oil held by countries hostile to the United States. The economic vitality group sees high energy prices and market volatility threatening the economy and the U.S. standard of living. These three are certainly not the only constituencies, but they are the three that define the public interest aspects of the current policy debate in the United States, and more important, they are each pushing an agenda that does not mesh with that of the others.

Tags: energy energy.news ecology

Posted by: theenergynet

British Energy proves a slow sell

EVEN today, 13 years after it was built, Britain's newest nuclear-power station looks futuristic, with its landmark white containment dome and the blue haze of Cerenkov radiation in the cooling pond. In contrast to the huge furnaces needed to burn coal, a reactor core at Sizewell B roughly the size of a smallish lorry produces 3% of Britain's electricity. But its construction was so controversial—sparking one of the longest planning inquiries ever—that, after it was finished, nuclear power was abandoned for a generation.

Tags: nuclear energy development uk nuke.news

Posted by: theenergynet

Nuclear Regulatory Commission calls meeting about local GE plant | WWAY NewsChannel 3 | Wilmington NC News

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has called a meeting regarding the GE Plant in Castle Hayne. The commission is concerned about an alert the global nuclear fuels facility issued in January when moisture may have leaked into a container of uranium dioxide powder.

The executive director of the environmental watchdog group NC Warn said it was most likely a human error. However Jim Warren voiced his concern, saying, "That's the NRC's clever way of saying there was no risk."

Tags: nuclear energy nrc ge hearing

Posted by: theenergynet

Plans for expansion of the Crow Butte uranium mine to a 2,100 acre near the cemetery north of Crawford will face additional scrutiny by the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission as the result of a ruling released April 29.

After considering issues raised at a January hearing in Chadron, a three member panel of NRC administrative law judges concluded that concerns about potential contamination of groundwater supplies and threats to human health raised by opponents of the mine expansion deserved further consideration and oral arguments.

Tags: nuclear energy fuel-cycle uranium mining

Posted by: theenergynet

SEABROOK — Three nuclear power plant security officers were the triggermen during separate accidental shootings during the past nine months, according to police.

The most recent incident involved an off-duty Seabrook Station security officer who accidentally shot a 9 mm bullet through his hand and will face criminal charges after making some medical progress, said Seabrook Police Chief Patrick Manthorn.

Tags: nuclear energy seabrook workers security

Posted by: theenergynet

We have long argued that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's approval process for nuclear power plant license extensions is a charade. The agency's inspector general continues to provide support for that thesis.

Six months ago, an audit of the license renewal process by the inspector general found that information provided in some NRC safety evaluation reports was identical, or nearly identical, to the corresponding applications, casting doubt on whether the NRC independently reviewed the applications.

Tags: nuclear energy license nrc nj

Posted by: theenergynet

Nukes: A Gorgeous Monument to Radioactive Decay

What do you do when you have a barn-sized pile of nuclear waste materials that you have to store for 100 years while it loses its toxicity? In the Netherlands, the answer was to stick it inside a giant art project: specifically, this orange building called the Habog Facility, covered in physics formulas by Einstein and Planck. Every twenty years, the building will be repainted in a lighter color to symbolize the slowly decaying radiation in the waste.

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Tags: nuclear energy fuel-cycle n-waste netherlands

Posted by: theenergynet
