ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A uranium mining company contends a U.S Environmental Protection Agency ruling is stalling its plans to begin operations in northwest New Mexico.

The EPA ruled last year that a 160-acre parcel near Church Rock is part of a dependent Indian community, therefore requiring that Hydro Resources Inc. obtain an underground injection control permit with the EPA, not the state of New Mexico.

U.S. District Judge Richard Matsch on Monday agreed to release some documents in a long-sealed case involving the Rocky Flats grand jury, but it was a hollow victory for jurors.

Matsch ruled that court filings, memos and other ancillary information be released.

But he kept a lid on the testimony of jurors who think the Justice Department undermined their 2 1/2-year criminal investigation and instead cut a deal for an $18.5 million fine against Rockwell International, the operator of the former nuclear weapons plant in Jefferson County.

Jay Davis thought a letter in the mail one October day in 2006 explaining uranium claims under or near his 80-acre Larimer County ranch had to be a joke.\n\nHe tossed the letter aside assuming one of his friends was trying to pull a fast one.\n\n“We just totally dismissed it,” Davis said.\n\nThen, a man from Powertech Uranium Corp. came knocking on his and neighbors’ doors explaining plans to mine uranium underneath thousands of acres north of Fort Collins.

The Coloradoan - State Senate panel OKs measure tightening uranium mine rules

DENVER - Fort Collins resident Marina Mayer was so overwhelmed by a unanimous Senate committee vote Thursday to tighten regulation of uranium mining in Colorado she broke down in tears.

"It's very emotional for me," said Mayer who is originally from Germany. "A week after my husband and I moved to Fort Collins, we heard about what was happening with the (Nunn) mine. There was a uranium mine in Germany and after it moved out the (landowners), well, they are still trying to work out the cleanup."
