French nuclear safety authorities said Friday that a broken pipe at a nuclear fuel plant in southeast France had caused a radioactive leak but no damage to the environment.

The latest uranium spill at the plant run by nuclear giant Areva in Romans-sur-Isere came amid much public concern over a leak at another facility last week that polluted the local water supply.

This disclosure should, moreover, be in language which can be easily and correctly understood by the public, and not massaged to hide the truth. After the accident, for example, I found that the dose officially assigned to the public, was called: "measured dose to the public from the accident" - where "measured" meant it only included the dose after the rate matres were in place the third day after the accident began; "accident" meant that the radiation dose received during the same time period in 1978 when the TMI reactors were all operating and there was Chinese nuclear test fallout, could be subtracted.

IAEA to Coordinate Major Exercise to Test Nuclear Accident Response

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will coordinate a major exercise to test the response to a simulated accident at Mexico´s Laguna Verde nuclear power plant starting tomorrow, 9 July 2008.

74 IAEA Member States and 10 international organizations will join the 48-hour drill to evaluate national and international preparedness for a possible nuclear or radiological emergency.

BRUSSELS, June 5 (UPI) -- Two incidents at nuclear power stations in Slovenia and the Czech Republic were quickly handled but left nerves jangled, the European Union said.

The EU said there was no environmental impact in either case but the scares had done little to help Brussels' campaign to restore public confidence in nuclear plant activity.

NRC releases Nuclear Fuel Services event notification reports

ERWIN — As Nuclear Fuel Services proceeds with plans to improve safety, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has released previously withheld documents detailing incidents at the plant over a three-year period.

Earlier this month, the NRC released 58 event notification reports between 2004 and 2007. Twenty-four of the documents pertain to NFS, and 34 were associated with BWXT in Lynchburg, Va.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has still to recover 15 hazardous radioactive sources and must focus on the fight to keep drinking water clean and contain chemical spills after May 12's massive earthquake, a senior official said on Friday.

But Wu Xiaoqing, vice environment minister, insisted the situation was under control after experts and equipment were drafted in from nearby areas, and there had been no accidental releases of radiation or uncontrolled hazardous leaks.

IAEA to conduct mock radiological event - UPI.com

VIENNA, May 22 (UPI) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency announced plans to hold a simulated nuclear emergency in Mexico to test international and national response capabilities.

The two-day mock radiation emergency exercise will take place at the Laguna Verde nuclear power plant in Alta Lucero, Mexico, on July 9 and 10. The exercise is an effort to test the ability of emergency authorities from 60 participating countries and 10 international organizations to handle a radiological emergency, the IAEA reported.

The Hindu: 30 radioactive sources recovered after China quake

Beijing (PTI): China has so far recovered 30 of the 32 radioactive sources which were buried under the debris during the devastating May 12 earthquake, Minister for Environmental Protection Zhou Shengxian said.

He said locations of two other radioactive sources had been detected and they would also be transported to "safe areas" soon.
