Here are some examples of electronic resources I've bookmarked for my library. If you expand all, you can follow the "more information" links to the bibliographic records in our catalog. (If you don't understand my library jargon, that's okay; just follow the links and it should be clear what I'm talking about.)

And this is just the tip of the iceberg; annotations could include sound and video clips, links to other suggested resources ("see also..."), hyperlinked search strings for the library catalog, WorldCat.org, Diigo, Google, or other sources, plus about a zillion things that I can't even think of.

This is a mockup of what I'd like to have on my website: a really rockin' linkroll. The "linkroll" is actually a cropped screenshot of a list I created. I'd probably omit the tags, but having the "expand" option would be great, along with alphabetization. Some of the pages I maintain at the University of Michigan-Flint Thompson Library contain dozens of links, and unalphabetized linkrolls would be a major headache to browse through. Right now I'm using del.icio.us linkrolls, but I'd like to have greater leeway in creating annotations: more text allowed, hyperlinks, sticky notes, etc. In other words: Diigo! Ideally, the linkrolls would be from bookmarks on my group. That way, students could join the group and add bookmarks that they and their classmates could use.

Create a new profile

In order to create a new profile, you use the Profile Manager. To start the Profile Manager in Windows, follow these steps:

Close Firefox completely (select File > Exit from the main menu of Firefox).
Select Start > Run... from the Windows Start menu (use the search box on Vista).
Enter firefox.exe -ProfileManager and press OK.

On Linux or Mac, start Firefox with the -ProfileManager switch, e.g. ./firefox -ProfileManager (this assumes that you're in the firefox directory).

You should now see the Profile Manager window, shown in the screenshot to the right.

From the Profile Manager you are also able to remove and rename profiles. Be very careful when deleting profiles; if you created the profile in an directory that already existed, the entire directory will be removed!

Highlighting & Clipping Basics

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

A highlight is only viewable to its owner on the original page, and is NOT viewable to the public on the original page unless there are public Sticky Notes associated with it. (This is designed to reduce graffiti on the original webpage)
On the Diigo website, all highlights will be shown as clippings along with the bookmarks. If a bookmark is public, so will be its associated clippings. (This is designed to maximize information sharing)
If the text you highlight contains hyperlinks, the dotted blue highlighter will skip the hyperlinks so that you can still click on the hyperlinks. And the associated clippings will also preserve the hyperlinks.
You can highlight and clip a combination of pictures and text.
Using our advanced bookmark search, you can search highlighted contents only, giving you quicker access to what you are looking for.
