Multiple Category Search

In addition to bookmark search, the Diigo toolbar's "MULTIPLE CATEGORY SEARCH" feature is extremely powerful, and allows you quick access to multiple search categories, each with multiple search engines, and all customizable. ( In fact, many users mention that Diigo's toolbar is worth installing for just this feature alone!)

In the example shown below, entering the search term "ajax" in the toolbar search box, and clicking "Web" will access the default web search engine. And accessing the pull-down menu under "Web" shows all the categories in which you can search. Clicking "Reference" in the pull-down menu will send the search to the default reference search engine ( in this case, Wikipedia).

Tips:

All the above search features can be accessed through the right-click menu or content selection menu after selecting some words on a page. Selected words will be captured in the search box for your convenience.
Use the Word Find and Highlight buttons to the right of the search box, to find and highlight words in the search box on the current page. (Note: this highlight, unlike highlighting by clicking Diigo button, is not saved.)
For Firefox, to access search engines that are not the default search engine for that category, you need to go into the category submenu. You can also right-click the category to conduct search with all engines in the category, and search results will open up into multiple tabs.
For Internet Explorer, there is no category submenu. Instead, mouse-over the down-arrow to the right of the search button to access other search engines in the same category.

Customize Search Menu

To customize your preferred search engines in Diigo's "MULTIPLE CATEGORY SEARCH", click "CUSTOMIZE" link in either the Multiple Category Search pull-down menu, or in the toolbar Options:

The "Search Menu Customization" page will show up:

Edit, drag and drop the search categories and engines until you're satisfied with the result. When you're done, make sure to click "SAVE ALL", so all the changes you made will actually be saved.

Tips:

Click a search category to list the search engines for that category.
Drag up and down search categories and engines to reorder, with the topmost in a list being the default.
To add categories or engines, select from the preset list, or add custom ones.
Edit or delete search categories and engines by clicking the icons..
When editing a (preset) category, checking the option "Shown on toolbar" will move the search button for that category from the pull-down menu to the toolbar. So put the most frequently used search categories right on the toolbar for one-click access, and leave the less frequently used categories in the pull-down menu.

Select category, and click "Edit" icon

Once expanded, check off "Icon" box

Reference Search Icon will then be shown on your toolbar:

Diigo

A must have for researchers
Diigo is a research tool that lets you share bookmarks and annotations on web pages using a browser plugin or bookmarklet. Notes are anchored to highlighted text and bookmarks save a cached copy of the site. Diigo will also let you save to multiple other bookmarking services (all the big ones) and email your annotated pages to friends who don’t have the plugin. We covered Diigo earlier.

Diigo has some advanced search functionality built in as well. With Diigo, you can search for the highlighted words on the web with any of four search engines, social bookmarking systems, on blogs, within the current site, amongst inbound links, and seven different content verticals (TV, stock sites, etc.). Diigo also lets you post links to your blog through posts, or a “linkroll” widget listing your most recent annotations.

By request from Maggie, i shall share this simple yet handy tip here. To classify your bookmarks by importance or urgency, you could e.g. tag your items High, Normal or Low. But you will do it even faster by numerical tagging, i.e. tagging your bookmarks 1, 2 or 3 respectively.

Invitations & Friends

Diigo is not just a great personal tool for web annotation, but is also a social network of people and information, where you can find the best of the web through people, not machines! A lot more "social" features are forthcoming.

Invitations

If you want to invite your friends to Diigo, send them an invitation by the Diigo system. You can either do this by selecting "INVITE MY FRIENDS" from the toolbar, or by using the box next to your bookmarks in the "My Bookmarks" section:

Just put in their email-address, and click "SEND INVITE". They will receive an email with a standard text, telling them that you invited them to try Diigo. If you want to write some text of your own, click on "PREVIEW INVITE", where you will then have the option of changing the invitation text:

Clicking on the exclamation mark (i) in the upper right corner of the box will show a history of the invitations you have sent out.

Friends

The people who have accepted your invitation to Diigo will show up as your "My Friends" in the sidebar of "My Bookmarks" section. Like the rest of the sidebars in this section, "My Friends" is collapsible if you click the title:

How To Use Diigolet

The first thing to remember about Diigolet is that it is not available until you request it by clicking the Diigolet button. And once you go to a new page, you have to request it again.

So to view or make annotations on any page, click the "Diigolet" button. A slim "Diigolet toolbar" will slide down on the top of your browser as shown below. Our system will prompt you to enter your username / password. (Note: click "Hide" to make the Diigolet toolbar disappear, and click "Diigolet" button again to re-appear.)

Now that Diigolet is active for this page, if there is any highlight or sticky note on that page for you, then you should see them

To bookmark a page, click "Tag this page". A bookmarking window will slide in from the left. (Note: click on any space and the window will disappear.)

To Forward a page, also first click "Tag this page", then click "Forward" link as shown above.

To highlight some text, select a block of text, "Highlight" link will automatically show up. Click it to mark the highlight:

To add a sticky note, simply mouse-over the highlight, "Add Sticky Notes" link will automatically show up.

Set-up

To set up the Diigolet, go to My Tools" download page

Then, follow these instruction:

For Firefox / Flock user:	Drag the DIIGOLET button in the " to your bookmarks toolbar, or right-click it and choose "Bookmark This Link", and then "Bookmark Toolbar" folder. (If your Bookmarks Toolbar is not visible, you need to go to View >> Toolbars to turn it on)
For IE user:	Right-click DIIGOLET and choose "Add to Favorites" and then select Links folder. (if the Links toolbar is not visible, you need to go to View >> Toolbars to turn it on)

Once done, you should see Diigolet on the top of your browser, and you are ready to go!

What Is Diigolet?

Like Diigo toolbar, the DIIGOLET is a browser add-on. But unlike the toolbar, it does not require pre-installation, and instead it is made available upon request. This type of light-weight browser add-ons are sometimes called bookmarkelet. Of course, Diigolet does much more than simple bookmarking -- it provides the basic Diigo functions such as highlight, sticky notes, and forward. - hence it is really a bookmarklet on steroid, or a super bookmarlet!

Although definitely not as powerful and convenient as the Diigo toolbar, as a lightweight alternative, DIIGOLET is especially useful when you are using a PC that you cannot or do not want to install any software.

RSS

Diigo offers full RSS integration. You can use an RSS feed to keep track of bookmarks, simply by subscribing to it in your favorite feed-reader, e-mail application or web browser. There are RSS feeds for every user's bookmarks, any tag and of course your Diigo subscriptions.

The RSS button can be found below the bookmarks (on the bottom of the page). Just do a right-click, save the link and paste it into your favorite feedreading application.

Add To Diigo

Webpages that are bookmarked to the Diigo website gain additional exposure, especially when bookmarked by a lot of people. If you want to encourage others to add your own website or your blog post / article to their Diigo bookmarks, you should include the "Add To Diigo" button in your webpages.

To generate the script, go to Add to Diigo, and choose the button style. Then, copy & paste the code into your own website's source code.

Ways to Use Blog-This

"Blog This" for a particular body of text

When you found something interesting while reading a webpage, you can spontaneously highlight a block of content and click "Blog This" button from the toolbar or the right-click menu:

Since this page has not been bookmarked yet, only your highlighted content (text, picture, or table of data), the page's title (link to original page) get automatically posted to an editing window, all nicely formatted, and ready for you to edit. On the left panel, choose which of your blogs (multiple allowed) and category to post to. You can post as draft or directly publish to your blog.

"Blog This" for an annotated page

Once you have annotated a webpage with highlights and sticky notes, you can make a blog post based on this annotated page by simply click "Blog This" button.

Because you have bookmarked this page, all your highlights and notes, along with Diigo members' public notes on that webpage will get automatically posted to an editing window, all nicely formatted and ready for you to edit. You will have an additional choice to edit based on "My Diigo Contents" only, or "Include All".

"Blog This" based on contents on a subject

Frequently after doing research on something, you have found relevant information on multiple pages. You can now easily "Blog This" based on contents on a subject by going to "My Bookmarks" section, checking off desired bookmarks, and selecting "Blog This" from the "More Actions" pull-down menu:

All information you entered and extracted will automatically be pre-populated in a new blog post editing window. This makes it very efficient for you to compose a new article based on various online content you've already researched!

Blog-This Platforms Support

Currently we support the following platforms:

We can auto-detect most blog platforms, but few blog platforms listed below require extra steps to setup. If somehow you still experience any difficulty, please inform us in our User Forum.

Movable Type (improved):

Moveable Type has a new version release. With the new version, your API password may be different from your blog password now.

Therefore, what you need to do is to first double check your API password by going into your blog’s Admin panel (Admin panel >> Author >> password), then use your API password when we ask you to enter your blog username/password.

MSN Live Space:

Before setting up your Diigo "Blog This" interface account, you need to first enable your blog API setting in your MSN Live Space (see instructions in http://msdn.microsoft.com/live/gettingstarted/spacesstart/default.aspx)

Follow the steps below to enable Publishing on an MSN Space and specify a secret word:

If you do not have a Passport account, create one at http://www.passport.com.
If you do not have a Space, create one at http://spaces.msn.com.
Go to Edit Your Space->Settings->E-mail Publishing.
Turn on E-mail Publishing.
Choose a secret word.

The MSN Live Space name and secret word are used as your user name and password when you communicate with the MetaWeblog API. For example, if the URL for a Space is http://spaces.msn.com/members/carnage4life, the user name for the MetaWeblog API is carnage4life. The password is the secret word that is provided during the steps above.

Once the above steps are completed, please follow through our regular procedure of adding a new blog to your Diigo account.

Drupal:

On the Drupal side:

Login to your Drupal admin section
Go to admin/modules and make sure the Drupal BlogApi module is enabled.
Go to admin/settings/blogapi, select the Metaweblog type

On the Diigo side:

Let Diigo auto-detect your API first by entering your blog's URL
Input your Drupal blog username and password
Edit the API, in Blog Type/Service: change Blogger ==> Metaweblog
(Note: Drupal's default blog API is Blogger, but it doesn't support blog title.)

Enhanced Linkrolls

Diigo provides several ways to connect your social annotation to your blogging experience. Both Diigo's "Enhanced Linkrolls" and "Blog-This" offer very unique blog-integration features unlike any other services out there!

Like other Linkrolls, Diigo's Enhanced Linkrolls let you have your latest Diigo bookmarks displayed as a part of your site. But that's not all. Enhanced Linkrolls let you share your annotated webpages with the world, so that your site readers can click and view your latest annotated webpages along with your public highlights / sticky notes.

So with minimal effort, you literally have an instant collaborative platform right on your site that lets you share your two cents on any webpage, and further invite discussions from you site visitors, all perfectly within context.

In addition, you also have the option of retrieving and displaying only bookmarks with a certain tag (or tag combination such as "tag1+tag2"). This is very helpful when your site caters to a specific topic. You can also create multiple linkrolls according to your need.

To generate the script for Diigo's Enhanced Linkrolls, go to linkrolls, select the display options. Once the script is generated, copy and paste it into your site's source code.

Diigo Enhanced Linkrolls

Icon:	display Diigo icon on top
Title:	enter text you wish to display
Only these tags:	retrieve your tag-specific public bookmarks. Combination tags allowed (such as, tag1+tag2)
Only annotated:	retrieve only your bookmarks with your highlights. Any public sticky notes / page comments will also be displayed in a small pop-up window when expanded. Of course, when others click into any of your bookmark link, the original webpage will be fully displayed along with any Diigo public annotations.
Count:	display how many bookmark links at once
Style:	Standard (blue font), Simple (black font), Customize (see below)
Customize:	we offer a full array of styling options. For example, select Title, then pick a color by pointing to a color desired. Then select Links to pick their color, etc. After finishing all selections, then click "CREATE SCRIPT".

Here is what it looks like once the codes are copied to your site's sidebar. Notice that any bookmark marked with your highlights, sticky notes, and comments will have an "EXPAND" link next to it. Click "EXPAND", all the public annotations on that webpage will show up in a small pop-up window.

Note: if there are public annotations made by other Diigo users, one can also click on their username and go visit their Diigo page. This is a great way to facilitate further information exchange for those commented on the very same webpage and easily let you and your readers identify those who share common interests!

Bookmark Search Basics

The Diigo on-site search lets you search your own as well as everybody's (public) bookmarks. Both full-text search and tag-based search are supported, using the same search interface shown below, by checking with "tags" or "full-text".

The first input box above specifies the scope of search. When "All" is selected, you will be searching the entire public bookmarks of the Diigo community, whereas "My" will only search within your own bookmarks (both private and public).

You can also directly enter a specific username instead of selecting All or My to search that user's public bookmarks.

Searching bookmarks in full-text will search the title, tags, comments, and the full text of each bookmarked page. Thus, when searching for several search words in full-text, the search results are those bookmarks which contain all the search words in its title, tags, comments, or the full text.
