Ed.VoiceThread

The Ed.VoiceThread network is a worldwide community where safety is built upon a foundation of accountability. All users are known users, responsible for their content and behavior. Access is restricted to K-12 educators, students and administrators, and all content is created exclusively by registered members of the community. Web services with free accounts are blocked in many school districts because of child online protection policies, and are not eligible for federal eRate monies. For this reason, there are no free Ed.VoiceThread accounts and student email addresses are not required.

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Cannot add contacts or send invitations to any users outside of Ed.VoiceThread

Cannot view content or commentary unless it's created or vetted by an Ed.VoiceThread member

Tags: district education erate voicethread

Posted by: maggie_diigo

BYOL Diigo Session | BlogWalker

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Diigo = critical literacy tool. Use for reflective writing. When searching a topic, use Diigo instead of Google to provide students with previewed, reviewed sites.

Classroom idea: set up a “tag” dictionary - it’s one of the options available when you create Diigo groups. Makes for easy evaluation: search a tag and then you’ll see which students have annotated the site.

Concept of tagging vs. concept of list - You can switch list into slideshow presentation of the websites you have chosen from Diigo. The pages are “live,” not just images.

Alice Mercer and Jennifer Dorman are leading this hands-on Diigo session.

Tags: diigo review education

Posted by: maggie_diigo

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Diigo is better than all the others. I dont know how to explain it, but it just does more. You can highlight, comment, share, twitter, etc. It has a great tool bar, too. Mostly, I hate add on tool bars, but this one is actually easy to use.

Tags: diigo review education

Posted by: maggie_diigo

educators group

Diigo - This cool tool has transformed my bookmarking, blogging, sharing, and twittering. Install it, set it up to send to your delicious account. Join the educators group (getting close to 400 members) and ad4dcss groups — when you send things to the group, make sure you select at least one of the tags that “pops up” (these are from our tag dictionary.) Also, go to tools and set up a nice little daily autoblog based upon a tag you specify. (Some just put the tag “blog” for everything they want to go to their blog that day!)

To get the most out of it, you definitely should use firefox and install the cute little bookmarklets. This is a definite tool for those writing papers!

Tags: diigo review education tools

Posted by: maggie_diigo

the formation of the universe according to astronomy. This asserts
that some 12-15 billion years ago there was a suddenly expansion and explosion

Diigo…possible use in the classroom « Technology Thoughts for Teachers

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

How cool would it be in a one-to-one situation, that instead of a teacher putting notes up on a screen for students to copy or where the teacher is lecturing and students notetake, that the teacher puts his/her notes in a blog format. The students would then go to the blog… highlight the important material and make personal notes about the information from the teachers presentation (click thumbnail above to see example). I realize that taking notes isn’t the high level of critical thinking that we hope to attain, but by presenting the material in this way, no time is wasted. In fact, it is then the teacher can take it to the next level and use it as a Learning-Focused ”ticket out the door” . Each student could then comment on the lesson that day and/or possibly address open-ended questions that the teacher has pre-made in her blog. This is just one idea as to how one can use Diigo in the classroom.

Tags: diigo education review

Posted by: maggie_diigo

What I like about Diigo is all the functions it offers. For instance, if I see a site I’d like to send to you I can highlight portions and even add a note (like a Post-it), then I can email it to you. Very cool. I also like the social networking tools - you can create groups and then leave messages for one another. It’s much like Facebook or MySpace interactivity. By the way, if you have a Delicious account, then you can set Diigo up to send all your newly saved sites to Delicious - they work well together.

Tags: diigo review education

Posted by: maggie_diigo

diigo? | Alex's reflecting pool

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

in this tool. I am in the process evaluating it for instructional and professional development purposes.

So far these are my thoughts:

I think I can easily mark up online student work with this tool.

I think online students can mark up each other’s online work with this tool. and discuss. One of the course activities is to use a rubric to evaluate an online course that the students will each be building as the main project for the course. The course review, I think, can be done using diigo. I think… not sure yet.

Online students can easily create annotated bibliographies of web resource in directed learning activities AND share and discuss them with others in the class.

This resource can grow and be available for the online course from term to term.

In addition, for webenhanced courses, this is an awesome, easy, slick, cool way to incorporate some very cool online enhancements to a f2f course that completely bypasses all the extra unnecessary flotsam you get with a full on CMS/LMS. you get a lot of functional features bang for the “buck” in this tool. It is a slick tool with a lot of functionality to suport interaction/collaboration, etc.

When i have my university administrator’s hat on i also see great potential as a tool to facilitate and enhance community and for professional development. I have an extended staff of 50-100 online instructional designers that i could use this tool with to aggregate links and info and resources and networking. We have over 3,000 online faculty that we could use this with to support them with info and resources and networking - differenciating between the needs of new online faculty and experienced online faculty… there is potential for discipline specific resources and info for online faculty… and it goes on.

Tags: diigo review education

Posted by: maggie_diigo

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Wow!
It's like Del.icio.us on Steroids! As we look at teaching kids about research and reading online, here is a tool that can pull it together, with the added bonus of collaboration with others researching the same thing!

quite often, a nugget like Diigo comes along that makes it worth following people. It's my own Personal Learning Network that allows me to learn from experts around the globe and share ideas.
I love the 21st century, and I love my Personal Learning Network!
I encourage you to give it at try!

Tags: diigo review education

Posted by: maggie_diigo

Digital Passports » Have you joined the DEN Diigo group? Facebook Group? LinkedIn Group?

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Diigo is a social bookmarking site that is really giving the current champion, del.icio.us, a run for its money. It does everything that del.icio.us does (including simul-posting to your current del.icio.us account!) and so much more. From highlighting on a page, to adding sticky notes, to sharing bookmarks with groups, it really turns websurfing from a passive experience to a highly active one. Jennifer Dorman created the DEN group in Diigo a little over a week ago and there’s already over 50 members!

Tags: diigo review education

Posted by: maggie_diigo

TCC08: Wikis and Blogs and Tags: Oh Why? « Experiencing E-Learning

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Social Connection Tools

“Increased engagement = Opportunity for Increased Learning”

Engagement is the why for these tools

Information Literacy & Sharing Discoveries

delicious

Diigo

Twitter

Annotations on sites helps information literacy.

Diigo = “delicious on steroids” with more annotations or conversations, sticky notes. More social community.

Collaboration Tools

Wikipedia

Kaltura–collaborative video editing

Google Docs

Diigo

Create a sharing community

Important to teach students collaborative skills to prepare for work

Teams are goal-directed

Diigo

Set up a group

Have everyone in the group highlight and add sticky notes to discuss the content

Diigo’s dashboard has forums for discussion

Automatic notification available so instructors can keep track of discussion

Help connect learning in class to learning outside

“Increased engagement = Opportunity for Increased Learning”

Engagement is the why for these tools

Cannot agree more! Well said! posted by maggie_diigo

Annotations on sites helps information literacy.

Tags: diigo review education

Posted by: maggie_diigo
