EERE News: Europe Falling Short of Renewable Energy Goals for 2010

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

the European
Union (EU) falling far short of its goal to use renewable energy for
12% of its energy needs by the end of 2010. As of the end of 2006, the
EU is at 6.92% renewable energy, having posted an impressive 0.46%
gain relative to 2005

reason for the shortfall is that the growth in renewable energy is
struggling to compete with a growth in energy demand

"the efforts being made for
(renewable energy) development ... are not accompanied by any real
effort to conserve energy."

Tags: efficiency energy renewables target

Posted by: ingenheiro

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

To achieve these objectives, every nation in the 27-member bloc is required to increase its share of renewables by 5.5% from 2005 levels, with the remaining increase calculated on the basis of per capita gross domestic product (GDP). EU countries are free to decide their preferred 'mix' of renewables in order to take account of their different potentials, but must present national action plans (NAPs) outlining their strategies to the Commission by 31 March 2010. The plans will need to be defined along three sectors: electricity, heating and cooling and transport.

Tags: burden directive renewables sharing

Posted by: ingenheiro

After the crucial Bali climate conference, which starts next week, the Commission is to make proposals on how to fight climate change in January, with a special focus on emissions trading, carbon capture and storage and renewables, among others. The EU will also have to decide on how to implement its ambitious climate change targets with a view to the international summit in Copenhagen tabled for the end of 2009.

Moreover, common ground on the issue of the final phase of liberalising European energy and gas markets is yet to be found.

Tags: eu presidency priorities renewables

Posted by: ingenheiro
