The Psychology of Numbers in PPC Ads | Get Elastic

According to Marketing Experiments‘ Dr. Flint McLaughlin, whenever you use an X-Y range in your ad, most people will revert to the first number as the mean (average) standard. In other words, on a range of 35-50%, one will assume that 50% off is the exception, and most items are 35% off.

Bond Art + Science explores the state of the art in inviting users to participate in the conversation online.

In the past, user participation in editorial publications was limited to writing "letters to the editor." On the web, users take an active role in shaping the message through their comments and debates.

Bond Art + Science looked at how traditional media and online publications invite, manage and benefit from user participation, and we identified some best practices and common pitfalls:

* How are users asked to register to contribute?
* How do site moderators manage comments to ensure quality?
* What are the best ways to treat user comments as content?

Tags: comments user experience social network reviews user interaction

Posted by: fre_entity

Although their use is not widespread, it’s important that every web developer becomes familiar with them, as they’re sure to be an integral part of the web’s future. Because of this, there are a number of articles and resources out there devoted to microformats.
usabilitypost.com | Using Light, Color and Contrast Effectively in UI Design

User interface (UI) design is both an art and a science. Artistic talent comes in handy when coming up with an attractive style and aesthetic, but at the core of UI design lies logic and method.

Very basic things like light, color and contrast are often overlooked, which can negatively affect the UI by misdirecting user's attention and not providing enough focus on the things that matter. Here's a quick overview of how to use each of these elements effectively.

Tags: user interface usability light color contrast

Posted by: fre_entity

Smart Image Resizer (PHP): a simple way to create thumbnails and more on the fly — Shifting Pixel

One of the challenges that comes with maintaining a graphic-intensive website like Shifting Pixel is finding a way to get high quality images throughout the site with as little effort as possible. To tackle this, I developed the Smart Image Resizer and have been using it around the site for the past few months. I couldn’t be happier.

Tags: php resize resizer tools development

Posted by: fre_entity

Best unobtrusive anti-spam technique (Not CAPTCHA) | Urbano's Blog

I know you are probably thinking that this will be some silly thing, but this idea that Thomas Landauer came up with is by far the best I've seen in a long time.

Add CSS-hidden fields that a user won't see, but a spam-bot will fill. Then using php check if they were filled, and if they were: block the spammer!

Tags: anti-spam contact form unobtrusive captcha php

Posted by: fre_entity
