Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Scientific knowledge grows organically, like a tree.

only about half of published papers are cited by subsequent research

The problem is knowing which branches to prune.

More worrisome, science might become a self-perpetuating aristocracy, rather than an open meritocracy. It may be necessary to tolerate a substantial amount of fruitless research in order to insure that science remains open to the gifted young, and to others working outside of elite research establishments.

It may be that science grows best wastefully and wild, without the horticulturist's tidying hand.

Tags: science epistemology interesting

Posted by: forestfortrees

We hadn't put much of an effort into it, I'll admit, though the original builder sought to. Our dirt is awful, just god awful. Ask my dad. He, the ardent gardener, is astonished by how poor the soil is. But this year the crabgrass grew in. And it looks good, real good. Plus it's helped prevent erosion from the occasional torrential downpours and for the most part it manages itself.

Elizabeth Kolbert recently did too in The New Yorker

Tags: lawn plants suburban culture science

Posted by: forestfortrees

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Leach and her colleagues had shown how experts can reach wildly wrong conclusions if local knowledge and history are not taken into account.

It promises to question the "assumption that the world is stable, predictable and knowable through a single form of knowledge that assumes one size fits all".

Leach wants the centre to involve "citizens and decision-makers of all levels".

"But we live in a world of dynamic change and uncertainty. We want to tackle these challenges head on, combining new theory with practical solutions that make science and technology work for the poor, and create sustainable environments from building on people's own knowledge. Economic growth is to be applauded, but one can't assume its benefits will trickle down to the poor."

"We urgently need new, interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and addressing situations that combine an understanding of social, technological and environmental processes,"

Tags: anthropology culture environment quantitative research

Posted by: forestfortrees

The World's Fair - Barry Commoner, Science, and Action: Part II

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

In environmental circles, uncertainty reigns supreme. Whereas science has traditionally been regarded as an authoritative tool for providing solutions to many knowledge-based problems, it has been less successful in the recent environmental context because of increasing competition from other interests.

scientific findings are married with local knowledges, community surveys, leaked documents, and investigative journalism, breeding more confusion and less consensus. It doesn't matter how many scientists stand up and say that we should be really, really concerned about global warming or mercury poisoning or the loss of biodiversity, we're still not acting.

If there is uncertainty in science, then scientists have an obligation to inform the public about these uncertainties when they influence their health, lives, and livelihoods.

Tags: activism blog environment interviews policy

Posted by: forestfortrees

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

It would appear we are a community of mostly like-minded people, who respect the scientific way of knowing, and exalt in the beauty and mystery of the world. We love questions more than answers, and distrust dogma wherever we find it, including, of course, in science.

Tags: community epistemology philosophy questions science

Posted by: forestfortrees
