Dept. of Education Home

It has been noted that learning and development occur through the agency of other human beings. At different times, these other human beings may be parents, friends, school teachers, or university faculty. The education they provide may be not only in school classrooms, but also within families and communities, or in cyberspace. The Faculty of the Education Department is vitally concerned with these essential human transactions, how they occur, what effects they have, and what affects them. Our faculty also is vitally concerned to prepare the next generation of thinkers, leaders, and scholars in the several fields of education. In this pursuit, we want our students to understand not only education in school classrooms, but also, in the broader, and increasingly multicultural, multilingual, and digital world we occupy. So, our students explore different angles of vision; they observe the differing effects of schools and institutions, the mediating effects of culture and language, the facilitating or constraining effects of leadership and public policy, and the profound effects of human differences. Through its research and teaching, the faculty mentors each individual student, works to elevate them as educators, and inspires in them enduring commitments to learning, scholarship, and excellence.

Tags: UC Santa Barbara education graduate

Posted by: debbyk

A conclusion drawn by one group was that if we are to teach lifelong learning skills, then teachers and leaders should be willing to model these skills, to present themselves as master learners. If we are to practice lifelong learning skills, then we should be willing to ask our students, “How do you do this on the Internet?” or “How did you get your web site to do that?”

It models learning lifestyle and offers respect for the skills and knowledge of many of our students. One of the higher ed folks described how they wanted their faculty to understand social networks, and, perhaps, to figure out how to use them. He said that they paid a 25 year old student to come in and demonstrate their social networking practices.

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Tags: David Warlick conference education keynote learning

Posted by: debbyk

As director of Washington State University's Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology, Gary Brown has stewarded the acceptance and growth of online learning, forged faculty development programs for early adopters and laggards alike, and struggled with the issues of assessment and accountability. But Brown sees more comprehensive changes ahead, especially as Web 2.0 technologies become widespread.

Tags: education mashup technology web2.0

Posted by: debbyk
