To further our exploration, TELR acquired a plot of virtual land (known as an "island") in Second Life. The purpose of this island, named TELRport, is: (1) To provide an exploratory educational SL forum for The Ohio State University community; (2) To further TELR’s capacity to support virtual environments for teaching, learning, and research; and (3) To establish an Ohio State instructional presence in SL.

Thus began the first scientific conference held in Azeroth, the online universe inhabited by millions of people playing World of Warcraft. Anyone who has been part of a conference's organizing committee knows that some glitches and mishaps are just unavoidable. And as usual, the problems that actually did occur were unforeseen. It was a success nonetheless. By the end of the third day, a real scientific exchange took place, I married one of the conference participants, and within an hour of the wedding, we were all dead.

As I see it, the solution for so many of these problems is live video streaming. To go from a frozen avatar waiting for his slides to rez, to a live talking head that can switch back and forth to a presentation or screencast-demo. I’d heard that there were ways to stream into Second Life, but most of those presentations were big ones done by major corporations, likely spending oodles of money. With a little elbow grease and some creative thinking though, I thought surely there must be a way to do it.

The new Sculpted Primitive tool allows users to model special primitive objects in Hexagon that can be exported in TGA format, then imported and used in Linden Labs' popular 3D virtual world, Second Life. In Second Life, these sculpted primitives can be used to create more complex, organic shapes that were not previously possible with the Second Life primitive system.

SculptyPaint is a low polygon 3D creation tool original written for creating sculpts; 3D low polygon models for SecondLife. But currently it can also export to .obj files that can be read in Blender, wings3D etc. You must see this software as a personal sketch/experiment; and it`s the first application I wrote.

University of Kentucky in the winners circle
