Morris was convicted in 1990 under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and sentenced to three years of probation, 400 hours of community service, and a $10,000 fine. The episode was a sobering experience for the technology community. The only thing that stopped the Morris worm from wiping out data on the machines it compromised was the forbearance of Morris himself: he had programmed the virus to propagate rather than to spread and destroy.

How do we find all those pages? We start at a set of well-connected initial pages and follow each of their links to new pages. Then we follow the links on those new pages to even more pages and so on, until we have a huge list of links. In fact, we found even more than 1 trillion individual links, but not all of them lead to unique web pages. Many pages have multiple URLs with exactly the same content or URLs that are auto-generated copies of each other. Even after removing those exact duplicates, we saw a trillion unique URLs, and the number of individual web pages out there is growing by several billion pages per day.

Both the Sun-Times and Tribune have revealed similar pension abuses. Former state Senator and County Commissioner Ted Lechowicz, for example, retired with a $130,000 pension despite never making more than $61,000 as an elected official. Similarly, former Sen. Art Berman’s yearly pension is $164, 612, almost three times higher than his salary with the state. Berman paid $109,292 into the state pension plan in his 31 years in the Senate.

Nonetheless, the fed took over the reigns at IndyMac and immediately strutted their stuff by renaming the bank. It’s now Indymac Federal Bank, a much safer and more secure handle for an institution that handles scores of billions of deposits by unwashed masses.
