  • PS/2 connector - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia on 2008-12-25
    • The PS/2 connector is used for connecting some keyboards and mice to a PC compatible computer system. Its name comes from the IBM Personal System/2 series of personal computers, with which it was introduced in 1987.
    • If a PS/2 mouse is connected to a PS/2 keyboard port (or if a PS/2 keyboard is connected to a PS/2 mouse port), the mouse (or keyboard) may not be recognized by the computer depending on configuration, although most modern computers will recognize the hardware either way.
  • Universal Serial Bus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia on 2008-12-25
    • In information technology, Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a serial bus standard to interface devices to a host computer. USB was designed to allow many peripherals to be connected using a single standardized interface socket and to improve the Plug and play capabilities by allowing hot swapping, that is, by allowing devices to be connected and disconnected without rebooting the computer or turning off the device. Other convenient features include providing power to low-consumption devices without the need for an external power supply and allowing many devices to be used without requiring manufacturer specific, individual device drivers to be installed.
  • Serial ATA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia on 2008-12-25
    • The Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA, IPA: /ˈseɪtə/, /ˈsætə/ or /ˈsɑːtə/) computer bus has the primary function of transferring data (directly or otherwise) between the motherboard and mass storage devices (such as hard disk drives and optical drives) inside a computer.

SATA offers advantages over the older parallel ATA interface: primarily faster data transfer, the ability to remove or add devices while operating (hot swapping) (only when the operating system supports it), thinner cables that let air-cooling work more efficiently, and more reliable operation.

Designed as a successor to the Advanced Technology Attachment standard (ATA), it is expected to eventually replace the older technology (retroactively renamed Parallel ATA or PATA, also known as IDE or EIDE). Serial ATA adapters and devices communicate over a high-speed serial cable.

  • AT Attachment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia on 2008-12-25
    • AT Attachment (ATA) and AT Attachment Packet Interface (ATAPI) are interface standards for the connection of storage devices such as hard disks, solid-state drives, and CD-ROM drives in computers.
    • Parallel ATA standards allow cable lengths up to only 18 inches (46 centimeters) . Because of this length limit the technology normally appears as an internal computer storage interface. For many years ATA provided the most common and the least expensive interface for this application. By the beginning of 2007 it had largely been replaced by Serial ATA (SATA) in new systems.

    • Different SCSI variations use different connectors, which are often incompatible with one another. These connectors usually use 50, 68 or 80 pins

  • HowStuffWorks "How IDE Controllers Work" on 2008-12-06
    • To allow for two drives on the same cable, IDE uses a special configuration called master and slave. This configuration allows one drive's controller to tell the other drive when it can transfer data to or from the computer. What happens is the slave drive makes a request to the master drive, which checks to see if it is currently communicating with the computer. If the master drive is idle, it tells the slave drive to go ahead. If the master drive is communicating with the computer, it tells the slave drive to wait and then informs it when it can go ahead.
    • Pin 39 carries a special signal, called Drive Active/Slave Present (DASP), that checks to see if a slave drive is present.
