How can I Find the Average Color of a Photograph? on 2007-04-28

How can I Find the Average Color of a Photograph?
Many popular image-editing tools allow you to determine the average color of a small section of an image, but we couldn't find any that could calculate the average color of an entire photograph. Enter, the Average Color Tool.
Possible Uses
* Convince your landlord that the carpet by the entry isn't as dirty as she claims it is.
* Prove that fruit sellers put the best-looking fruit in the most prominent location.
* Use your own travel photos to decorate a room; a well-chosen combination could dramatically emphasize the beauty of your photos.
* Monitor how the greens in your garden change from season to season.
Choose your Image
Simply use the boxes below to upload a photo (.jpg or .jpeg files only) from your computer or directly from flickr, and the average color tool will take care of the rest. (Maximum filesize: 2 Megabytes)

A lot of sites have been promoting pages for web developers, but none of them have asked what people are actually using to do good work. This site hopes to answer that question and provide people with the best sites first - not somewhere in the middle of long lists.
I also find myself looking for links I know I've seen on the web before, but can't seem to remember where. This site saves my good links, and organizes them by category so I can find them again. If you saw my list of unorganized bookmarks in my browser... it's sad.
Small Software Workshop falls under the Don't Be Evil corporate charter.
I hope you enjoy the site, and if you have any questions you can contact me at: billing@tlbox.com

Terapad.com's tagline, "Beyond Blogging," is fairly apropos. Many other free online apps, such as Blogger, Vox, LiveJournal, and WordPress.com, put their focus strictly on the act of blogging—other features are added only to enhance that experience. With Terapad, blogging is just one of its tools, which are aimed at helping you quickly and easily create an online presence. Depending on what you're looking for, Terapad's broader, more business-minded focus will prove either a blessing or a curse.

After a visit to the home page, however, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Terapad was primarily a blogging service. Like a traditional blog site, it lists links to blogs that have been created using the service, a searchable list of post tags, and links to image galleries. On a whole, the layout indicates a service that's attempting to build a community, something that's becoming more and more popular among free blogging services. It's nothing like the social-networking features offered by the Vox or LiveJournal sites, but it is a quick and easy way to discover how others use the platform. Under Terapad's surface is a good selection of tools that might help your very small business boost its online presence. More on these later.—next: Getting Started >

New Tool Lets Managers Control IM, Web Use
Internet Control for Businesses lets small businesses monitor and restrict employee activities online, including IM and Web browsing.

A vendor that makes software to protect children from online predators has developed a product for small and midsize businesses that lets management monitor and restrict employee use of instant messaging and the Internet.
Zihtec Monday is announcing Internet Control for Businesses, (ICB), which blocks instant messaging programs, access to inappropriate Web sites and prevents employees from shopping online or taking care of personal business during work hours.
Employers can use the product to restrict Internet usage to certain hours of the day, such as lunch breaks, or to restrict online chats to certain departments and to specific times. ICB provides reports to management showing employees' Web surfing history and text of discussions they have via instant messaging.
Some firewalls block instant messaging entirely, so "you have it all or you have nothing," says Zihtec founder Gabriel Luu. "The nice part about us is you're still allowed to have usage of everything out there, but it's restricted and controlled by the business owner."
Restricting Internet and IM to certain times of the day is not a unique feature, however, says Forrester senior analyst Natalie Lambert, who has not been briefed by Zihtec.
"I consider this good functionality. I wouldn't consider it unique," she says.
The same features can be found in Web content filtering products from Websense and McAfee , Lambert says.
It makes more sense for a business to deploy products from McAfee or Websense because they also provide comprehensive protection against hackers, malicious code and other threats, she says.
"This (Zihtec offering) absolutely looks like a standalone product for employee productivity," Lambert says. "If they're not doing Web content filter
