  • I’m another high school drop out, but... : IAmA on 2009-10-07
    • ...as I was growing up I somehow learned how to speak and write English (English is not my native language) just from watching TV and collecting baseball cards. I grew up to be an English teacher in my country, then a translator in a manufacturing company, and now I am the supervisor in the Audits and Documentation Department. I had been thinking about posting something in the IAmA reddit for quite sometime, but the only thing that came close to being interesting was the fact that I never studied English and that I’m pretty good at it. Today I read the post by a kid who is a high school drop out and doesn’t really do anything with his life. It kind of inspired me to post this.

      I was actually doing the same, but at that time, the internets were not readily available to everyone, so what I did was I started reading all the books my dad had in the house... this made me realize how much I had missed before and I think gave me the knowledge to get a good job (I was lucky, though) and eventually get out of my house and live a real life. If this kid from the other post is reading this; stop wasting time on the internet, or use it to get your education finished. It’s amazing how many people have the best opportunities to accomplish something meaningful in life and don’t take advantage of them. Best of luck to you, man.

    • I dropped out of high school but I didn't let that hold me back. I've educated myself reasonably well and I now have a great job, earning close to six figures.

      The biggest hurdle to succeeding without a college degree is your attitude. A lot of people I know say things like "I'm hopeless without a high school education. I can never do anything besides manual labor, for the rest of my life. Oh well." and that is total bullshit. I say to them, "Look at me, I'm fairly successful without a diploma or degree.". To which they always reply "But you're super smart and I'm not.." or something to that affect.

      I partially blame the media and society in general for saying, as a whole, "If you're not formally educated, you have no hope.". Sure, it might encourage kids to finish school but it's also screwing up people who already dropped out, or are going to no matter what, due to their circumstances.

      Some of the dumbest, most ignorant people I know are college graduates. Some of the most creative, quick witted and all around smartest people I know are high school dropouts. There is a chance for everyone.

      Life doesn't begin after college, it begins when you get off your ass, stop feeling sorry for yourself and decide it begins.

    • love makes us think differently in that it triggers global processing, which in turn promotes creative thinking and interferes with analytic thinking. Thinking about sex, however, has the opposite effect: it triggers local processing, which in turn promotes analytic thinking and interferes with creativity.

  • Sertifikasi Guru untuk Menaikkan Gaji Menjadi 2 Kali Lipat? « Awan Sundiawan on 2009-10-05
    • Kalau seorang guru telah lulus sertifikasi baru diberi penghargaan berupa tunjangan profesional (besarnya agar disesuiakan dengan pemenuhan kesejahteeraan). Sekarang ada pemahaman bahwa sertifikasi merupakan formalitas untuk mendapatkan gaji dua kali lipat sehingga bagi guru yang belum siap akan menjadi iri, “Mengapa saya tidak lulus, tidak mendapatkan tunjangan profesiona? Kan saya juga PNS mengapa dibedakan? Kalau begini pemerintah sepertinya setengah hati untuk menysejahterakan guru”. Itulah pemahaman yang terjadi di lapangan.
    • Saya guru yang telah lulus sertifikasi kuota 2006, siapa bilang sertifikasi guru berat, tidak, saya buktinya, tanpa koneksi, tanpa ini dan itu, cukup melengkapi fortofolio sesuai yang dibutuhkan, alhamdulillah lulus, kalau guru yang benar-benar melaksanakan tugas dengan baik pasti lulus, kalau guru malas ya mimpilah, apapun gak ada, diklat gak pernah, Perangkat pembelajaran gak punya, karya tulis gak ada, apalagi media pembelajaran, belum lagi prestasi, bahkan mungkin di masyarakat juga adem ayem, malas tidak berinteraksi. ya susahlah. yang pasti kualifikasi guru yang ditetapkan pemerintah dipenuhi. luluslah pasti. saya tinggal nunggu proses selanjutnya, berapa yang akan saya terima, masa kerja 11 tahun, pangkat III-D?

      WHO’s assessment system was based on five indicators:

      1. overall level of population health;

      2. health inequalities (or disparities) within the population;

      3. overall level of health system responsiveness (a combination of patient satisfaction and how well the system acts);

      4. distribution of responsiveness within the population (how well people of varying economic status find that they are served by the health system);

      5. and the distribution of the health system’s financial burden within the population (who pays the costs).

    • Here’s an example command:

      wibble > /dev/null 2>&1

      Output redirection

      The greater-thans (>) in commands like these redirect the program’s output somewhere. In this case, something is being redirected into /dev/null, and something is being redirected into &1.

      Standard in, out, and error

      There are three standard sources of input and output for a program. Standard input usually comes from the keyboard if it’s an interactive program, or from another program if it’s processing the other program’s output. The program usually prints to standard output, and sometimes prints to standard error. These three file descriptors (you can think of them as “data pipes”) are often called STDIN, STDOUT, and STDERR.

      Sometimes they’re not named, they’re numbered! The built-in numberings for them are 0, 1, and 2, in that order. By default, if you don’t name or number one explicitly, you’re talking about STDOUT.

      Given that context, you can see the command above is redirecting standard output into /dev/null, which is a place you can dump anything you don’t want (often called the bit-bucket), then redirecting standard error into standard output (you have to put an & in front of the destination when you do this).

      The short explanation, therefore, is “all output from this command should be shoved into a black hole.” That’s one good way to make a program be really quiet!
