Hosting Tips for SEO on 2007-04-11
-
While there is limited evidence regarding the matter, it is generally a good idea to go ahead and secure your own IP address. Some shared hosting companies do not allow you to do this, so make sure before signing up. The last thing you want is a ton of porn, gambling, and banned made-for-adsense (MFA) sites sharing IPs with you. This is part of the “Bad Neighborhood” concept you may have heard of at one point or another. Your best bet, get your own IP and stop worrying about your neighbors.

SDSC Computer Security Experts Help FBI Capture Computer Terrorist on 2007-03-16
-
Incensed, Shimomura canceled a ski vacation and assembled a team of
computer experts to hunt down the intruder. They traced Mitnick to Netcom,
a nationwide Internet access provider, and with the help of federally
subpoenaed phone records determined that he was placing calls from a cellular
phone near Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the Times said.
Early Monday morning, Shimomura drove around Raleigh with a telephone
company technician. They used a cellular frequency direction-finding antenna
hooked to a laptop to narrow the search to an apartment complex. The FBI
arrested Mitnick after a 24-hour stakeout.

FCW.com News - White hat, gray hat, black hat on 2007-03-13
-
- White hats are paid professionals hired by government and industry. They research vulnerabilities to protect employers' and customers' data, networks and other information technology assets. Like sheriffs and other law enforcement personnel, white hats work within the rules of their organization and federal, state and local laws.
- Gray hats are unpaid tinkerers who find flaws to improve security for everyone. The best and brightest hackers are gray hats because their passion for tinkering drives their excellence, Proctor said. Gray hats don't break the law, but they don't have to comply with the rules of any organization, hence their gray status.
- What separates black hats from other hackers — and makes them criminals — is that they break the law and feel justified doing it, Proctor said. Some seek to increase their fame in the hacker community, while others want to prove at any cost that their targets' security is vulnerable. Black hats wreak havoc not only by their own actions but also by drawing attention to weaknesses that they and cybercriminals can exploit.

Linus Torvalds is known as the father of Linux, the most popular Unix-based operating system in use nowadays. Linus started his work on a new operating system in 1991, adopting several controversial technologies for his project, namely the concept of Free Software and GNU's Public License system. He is also known for his early disputes with Andrew Tannenbaum, the author of Minix, which was the inspirational source for Linus' OS project.

Let Us Now Praise Famous Hackers -- Page 1 -- TIME on 2007-03-13
-
Hackers, as most computer experts use the term, are distinguished not by
their mischievousness but by their persistence and skill. Some of the
key breakthroughs in modern computer science, including the development
of the personal computer, can be traced to these often
fanatically dedicated people. Even today, men and women who are proud
to call themselves hackers can be found in the research departments of
almost any major computer firm, designing state-of-the-art machines and
writing the software that runs on them.

Great Hackers on 2007-03-13
-
The best hackers tend to be smart, of course, but that's true in
a lot of fields. Is there some quality that's unique to hackers?
I asked some friends, and the number one thing they mentioned was
curiosity.
I'd always supposed that all smart people were curious--
that curiosity was simply the first derivative of knowledge. But
apparently hackers are particularly curious, especially about how
things work. That makes sense, because programs are in effect
giant descriptions of how things work. -
So, I think, maybe I should say
Richard Stallman, or Linus Torvalds, or Alan Kay, or someone famous
like that. But I have no idea if these guys are great hackers.
I've never worked with them on anything. - 3 more annotations...
